I know several people have built there own roof baskets and others have purchased commercial jobs. I am wondering what the ideal size isfor a basket tat could be made to anysize requested? I have a sunroof and want a basket that doesn't cover it and actually stops far enough to let me mount lights on the basket without the lights being over the sunroof. The basket will be mounted to the factory rails on the side and have integral cross rails.

If you want roof lights without them getting in the way of of the sunroof, then the mopar stock lightbar would work. I installed mine, it works great, a little narror on the beam path, but other than that no compaints. As for the roof basket, the idea size is what you think. I have the megawarrior basket with one extesion and that takes up the whole roof.

Thanks. I really like the Mopar lights, but the cost is a little steep for me right now. What about the height of the rack? I am thinking maybe 4 inches but am not sure if 5 would not be better.

height as in depth or off the roof? With the low rider towers that Yakima sells, the rack will be at least 4 inches off the roof, and the basket is about 5" deep, so that raises you up a bit. I made a roof rack that the mega warrior basket attaches to in order to lower the overall profile because I didn't like the basket way up in the air. Now the basket is only a few inches above the ligthbar.

Height as in depth. I am planning to have the rack mount directly to the existing roof bars (stock bars on an 03 sport) and try to keep as low a profile as possible.

Nice setup and front hitch. How much was the yak rack and any suggestions as to where to get one cheap?

Thanks,
I got the Rack at REI, being a member is great with the dividends. Without the rack extension was about 370, add 100 or so for the extension. You can find some good deals on the web, just look around.
