Not that type of help but after all this we will see.

As it stands my Jeep is stuck on an embankment of plowed snow and ice. I was able to drive forward over it no problems in F/T but coming back in reverse got stuck. Initially thought I was high centered over some large chunks of ice. Dug out the entire underbody, couldn’t see anything the body could be resting on. Driver’s rear tire is tuck pretty good in the wheel well and with the angel I’m on the passenger side is flexed pretty far. Nothing looks broken as far as I can see. Weird thing is the wheels aren’t moving when I give it any gas so not sure if something could be broken. Front wheels spin but not biting. Like I said I dug under the Jeep, around all the wheels but I don’t have any sand or wood to lie down under the wheels. Plus I’m not sure if something is broken in the rear. I didn’t hear any hard thuds or anything as I went back over but as I tried to get myself stuck further I heard a knock from either the tranny or the t-case, I assume? I wasn’t trying to rock her, just tried to find some sort of movement or traction as I dug what I could out. No shovel with me, -30 or so (Celsius) out, 3 am, cold, wet, tired and just me the stuck Jeep and g/f. We weren’t out in the middle of nowhere so I eventually just called a cab. Pics would help I know. I had my work phone that isn"t a camera phone. Going back this morning with my boss and his HEMI Ram to see what we can do. I'll take pics if we're unsuccessful. I feel like a real tool . I'll be hearing about this from by boss for awhile.

I think all I really need is a pull to give me some momentum as she doesn’t really look that stuck. I could be under estimating as it was late and dark. I was getting scared digging underneath the Jeep on my belly, she could have

Hope this all makes some sense. Looking for nay advice as I’m totally L.O.S.T. Got no hitch or tow hooks so any thoughts on possible recovery points in the back? I’d rather not destroy my Jeep…any further :? . Thanks guys

Just put the strap around the rear axle where the control arm mounts to it. Tell the guy in the hemi to be SURE not to jerk or tug real hard. Tell him to take the slack out of the strap then pull slowly.. If it has 4low, tell him to put it in that and take it easy.

It should come right out no problem like that.. Unless youve got it in there good.

Do you have the jeep in fulltime? Or part time? If its in fulltime, thats why the rear wheels are not spinning.

How much is the recovery equipment and skids worth to you now?

Thanks for info Jeepjeepster. Boss pulled me out no probs. KJ runs fine, guess I was just a little paranoid. Didn't take any pics, I don't want further evidence of this :P . Yeah, more recoverey gear including tow hooks on order.

What did you end up doing?

Did the boss give you much crap about it?

Glad you got out ok. Assuming "F/T" in your note means full-time, I think that's your problem. In full-time, all power will go to the wheel that slips because the differential is open between the front and rear axles (someone correct me if I'm butchering the explanation). In your case, all power went to one of the the front wheels, which was slipping. You might as well have been in 2wd. If you went with part-time, power would be split between the front and rear axles because the front/rear differential is locked in part-time. In part-time, your front wheel would probably still spin, but one of your back wheels would probably grab and pull you out.

In your situation I heard that lightly stepping on the brake while giving it gas can also help. Stepping on the brake creates enough resistance in the differential(s) to shift power to non-slipping wheels. I haven't tried this.

The guys with lockers are probably reading this and laughing.

Some times you got to be a little daring.

That is a bad thing about 4 wheel drive without lockers, all you have is 2 wheel drive... the 2 wheels without traction

The esp on my CRD makes it a little better, it keeps the wheels from spinning. I use the holes in the frame rails to pull people out of the snow....at least untill i have my new arb bumper

4 Wheel drive with open axles = all power to the wheels that are spinning. If you have a LSD in the rear, you could try the "parking brake" trick to fool the LSD into putting power into both rear wheels. I think that it's 3 or 4 clicks. You should have been in Part Time 4wd as it locks the front and rear power transfer together instead of letting the front spin at a different speed.

Hooked a tow strap to the control arm, put it neautral and my boss just eased me out. I even tried being in part-time but she was really stuck. Yeah, boss gave me some heck for needing his help to pull out my Jeep, he figured it should have been the other way around. All good fun now.

My boss told me about that e-brake trick, gotta remember that next time, which hopefully doesn't happen for a long time  .

Thanks for all the help/advice.

Sometimes if you put it in part-time when you cannot move, it wont even go into Part-time. Same thing with coming back out, be sure to give it time to go in and out of 4 wheel drive.

Glad nothing on the Jeep got damaged. Now get some better tires and tow points!
