| Post subject: | Problem with shifting an automatic |
Hi all, hope you can help me out. My Jeep shifts from P all the way down to 1 no problem. Going from any gear up towards P is all sticky/clunky/really hard to push up and feels like something is going to break. But only sometimes. What gives? 2003 automatic with 73K. Last time I took my Jeep to the dealer for a funky transmission thing it was $300 bucks for them to find no reason why I was going 45mph and hit the gas but the engine just revved like it was in neutral. Luckily it only did it once, but now it did it again in reverse. Then it was normal again. The light that shows what gear you're in and lights up the hazard light has been out for about a year. Sometimes it spazzes and comes up for a couple minutes then it's gone and you can't see what gear you're in. Not necessarily related, just annoying. Don't see a fuse listed for this. That's it. Still love my Jeep but would love it more if it didn't feel like it was going to break putting it into park. Thanks for any help/money saving advise. |

First thing I would look for is something maybe falling down into the shift assembly, coins, ink pen, ect. May be able to pop the shift cover enough to see down in there? then check engine bay where shift cable hooks to tranny. If those areas look clear than you might expect to have a fraed or dry shift cable.things like this are hard to diagnose without seeing the vehicle, but these are good things to expect. Hope this helps, Ron |

A buddy of mine with a 98 Cherokee was having problems shifting his auto shortly before the transmission destroyed itself. He later sold it for a grand prix (the poor guy), hopefully yours isnt anything like that. Ive never had a vehicle with an auto, and I dont know that much about diagnosing problems sorry I cant help more. |

The revving up might be a sign of the tranny going out on you or the shifter just jumping out of pace due to something stuck in their. If nothing is obstructing the shifter then take it to a transmission shop, most will do a test drive to check it out. |

now when you get to 45 mph and the engine jsut revs when your hitting the gas do you end up losing that speed or are you able to maintain that speed? I jsut had my catalytic convertors replaced due to them failing on me. I could get the engine up to about 30 mph and then it would just fall down from there and i couldn't get it back up...engine would rev though just no response to the accelerator getting pushed...check out your cats and see if they look like they been getting abnormally hot...just a thought... |

I hope it's a penny. Guess it's time to take some stuff apart. Thanks for the ideas so far guys. Quote: now when you get to 45 mph and the engine jsut revs when your hitting the gas do you end up losing that speed or are you able to maintain that speed?
It was cruising at 45 and just revved like it was in neutral and began slowing down, I just coasted to the side, put it in park, turned it off and started it again. Then it was fine. (I like commas) pleasebeapennypleasebeapenny.... |
