Post subject:  High Pitch Whine in Cold Temperatures

Has onyone else experienced a high pitched whine in vold temperatures. It generally only happens below freezing and happens more frequently the colder it gets. The sound is related to the RPMs and seems to happen around 2500RPM. If I go much higher or lower, the whining goes away. Any ideas.

another weird thing at low temps is a scuffing sound that seems to be coming from the suspension and occurs when there is any significant compression. It almost sounds like lightweight plastic scrapping against someting, but I can't find what it would be.

Hi! Check the fluid level in your power steering reservoir. The other sound you describe could be sway bar bushings needing a shot of lube.

Trailpixie,

I noticed the same whine this morning when it was -3 degrees F. I left the stereo off this morning (no reason) and heard it for the very first time. The noise stops as soon as I take my foot off the gas pedal. I was probably in 4th gear each time, maybe 3rd. I'll listen for it when I got out for lunch.

As for the groaning, your sway bar bushings need lubrication. I use Liquid Wrench silicone spray because it's gentler than WD-40. I have a polyurethane spacer lift and sometimes have to squirt the spacers where the springs push against them. That eliminates the crunching sounds.

Thanks. I'll give that a try. As for the whining, I kind of think it is by design. Mine has always done it--since the day it was new. I was just driving home from the mountains yesterday and the temperature never went above 12 degrees farenheit, so the thing was wining like a big dog.

I always thought that was the belt loosening up after being froozen on those cold nights.

Check the passenger. They often emit a high pitched whine in cold temperatures until the jeep heats up (or at least until the seats warm up)

Mine makes the same noise when I first start on real cold mornings. Sounds just like the power steering. Prob no big deal... It was only 10 here this morning and supposed to be worse tomorrow AM. Looks like ill be plugging in my block heater for the first time tonight. Wish me luck!

Mine makes alot of whining when it's cold. It's coming from my power steering because there is air in the line. I've been unable to find the leak yet, but once the fluid heats up, the sound goes away. Could this be what youre experiencing?

My Liberty has been starting just fine even with today’s morning temp of -20F. I do hear the whining noise; I noticed it a lot more this winter compared to previous ones. I checked the coolant about two months ago and it was at the correct level and chemical mixture. When I’m sitting inside the vehicle I can here more of a whining noise if I move the steering wheel, but the power steering fluid is just fne.

Yep...I've experienced the same noise...sounds like the belts are really tight...but like Sleeve84028 said...I think after a while it loosens up and the noise goes away. Does anyone get a noise like a turbo whistling from their KJ?? I've always had this neat little whistling and my friends are always puzzled when they hear it. I'm thinking its the air intake off the airbox.... :?

Me and Video Guy have been experiencing negative temps here in Indiana..... I have been keeping my KJ and my mom's Pontiac Torrent in the garage with a small space heater warming the garage for easy starting. Seems to start well on the cold mornings....

On saturday I took my girlfriend to Logan's Roadhouse for some dinner. After we got out I started the KJ and as I went to back up I heard a LOUD crunching and moaning while backing up. I didn't even go a foot before I stopped and frantically put it in Park and then putting it in drive again thinking it was the tranny. I then went to back up again...same noise....so I got out and looked to see if there was an ice chunk or something stuck somewhere in the rear/front of the jeep....nothing. So now I'm really panicing and trying to figure out whats going on. So I get back in and I for some reason think to put the jeep in Neutral. It won't roll...so I think for a minute as the KJ warms...I then think about the snow/ice gathering in my wheels and the rear drums....after a few minutes the jeep starting rolling backwards and the noise went away. The drums must have froze up from the ice/slush gathering in the wheels....and it provided a nice scare! I was definitly freaking for a minute....but after some quick thinking I quickly knew what the problem was.

Jeger.....LUCKY! :P I wish I owned a CRD (without the issues anyway...) but my checkbook wouldn't allow as I've said manytimes before...

I would love to own a turbo diesel....so I'm not complaining having the nice little whistling....it sounds cool!!

I GET THE SAME, SOME IS OBVIOUSLY FROM POWER STEERING. BUT I ALSO GET A LITTLE FROM HEATER FAN! GOES AWAY SOON ENOUGH, BUT IN THE MEAN TIME, I FOUND A NEW CAVITY IN A TOOTH!!

I would say pick up a used CRD but then again, you may end up buying someone else's problems. Seems like if the person isn't in love with the car and would never sell it then they hate it and want it gone and fast.

My 03 Dakota made that sound at about 55 mph. If you go a little faster or slower it would go away. It did only when it was below freezing. I took it into the stealership and they couldn't figure it out. Nothing was ever found to be wrong.

Rear axle fluid too thick and its flow ain't keeping up with the gear spinning.

Drive under 40 until it warms up.
