i went outside this morning and noticed a leak of something under front passenger side.

the liberty was driven the night before and had been sitting overnight in the arctic chicago weather.

it was too cold for me to get under there this morning but i'll check when i get home tonight. any ideas as to what this is?

Could be a cold leak from the radiator hoses. Tighten them up for starters, and hope it's not a crack in the radiator.

do i need anything special (wrenches etc) to do that?

not to tighten a coolant hose... I don't think it would be a loose hose though because it would probably just blow off entirely if it was loose enough to leak a puddle like that. From that picture, the fluid color looks red so I'd run my hand under the forward edge of the Liberty trying to feel for any liquid and checking for color and feel when found.

If the fluid is tacky it'll be coolant
If it's smooth than it's trans fluid

Also don't rule out the possibility that the fluid was left by another vehilce parked in the driveway before you.

I cannot tell from the pic, but is it even red?

Couldnt it just be water? Ice could be melting since the sun is coming up. :?

before i left this morning i noticed a fresh spot so i soaked up some of it with a paper towel - the sheen on the towel made it look oily but the liquid itself had no tint to it. its not water.

when i got home just now i put it on ramps and gave it a look.

something was dribbling down as you can see from the pics but i didnt wipe anything off when i used a towel.

i checked my oil and trans level and both were good. with the combination of cold + snow + trying not to ruin a camera i didnt notice if it was sticky or not.

i parked the liberty in my garage and put some cardboard underneath to catch it in the act if it happens again.

any ideas?

(Correct me if I'm wrong) But I think the oil pressure sending unit, or switch, is on that side of the engine and is known for developing a leak. You might need a flashlight to pinpoint the source of your specific problem though.

The oil pressure sending unit is on the driver side just above the oil filter because I have gotten to change that one it is fun lol. Check your lines into your Rad because they run along the passenger side and I think those are the ones that run the trans fluid into the Rad for the built in trans cooler but who knows anyways the oil pressure sending unit is located on the driver side above the oil filter on my 02 liberty.

I was told that the little leak on the right side was my steering rack.

i had a leak that was very similar ro yours i believe, it ended up being my rack and pinion! had it replaced under warranty and it was fine since. It didnt leak much just about the same as what i saw on your driveway. But it could be alomost anything.
