IMO....they could have atleast incorporated that front end on the new KK to keep the same general look as the KJ. All in all though...that's a pretty cool design.

Actually, the concept and production versions don't look all that different to me. Sure the production version has 4 doors verses the 2 on the concept but the overall shape and style is clearly identifiable between the two. I really like the Compass - it's small enough for what most people actually need and still big enough to pack full of stuff.

My biggest compliant about the compass (I've actually driven one and riden in one) is the back seat. You really need to be flexible to get in and out of the back seat, and the seatbelt buckle position is not the greatest. Other than that - it drives just fine.

The big difference between the concept and production compass is the frontend. The production compass has a big bulky frontend thats looks massive and kinda big for it, where as the concept as a sleek frontend with style and well porpotioned.

I don't get car companies in general.

I mean, they spend all that money coming up with great-looking concept cars, and invariably, when they go into production they end up looking like doo doo version of the concept.

What's up with that?

That looks much better and would be a nice "rally style" competitor with the Subaru and Mitsu...with AWD and a nice 2.0-2.2L Turbo Intercooled Diesel.

That was the 2002 compass concept vehicle

http://www.daimlerchrysler.com/dccom/0- ... 0-0-0.html

It looks like a cross between a VW toureg and the Jeepster concept vehicle to me. But I like it much better than the current Compass. They changed all the wrong things when they went to the production model.

Good question dirtykj I totally agree with you. I think it all boils down to cost to stamp out a part they like the concept idea but want it as cheap as they can get it and if a mass produced part is going to be cheaper and not look like the concept so be it. This is just my theory no real proof but I know the from my experience the upper management world typically wants everything as cost effective/cheap as possible. The world is ran by the all mighty dollar and I guarentee that Lamborghini's or Ferrari's prototype looks darn near exactly like the production model just because cost is not a factor in thier design or production protocol per say.

Did you guys read the specs on the concept? It has the 3.7 v-6 and basically the same suspension as the KJ. And the spare was on the back. They changed a lot more than the number of doors when it went to production.

That's just a whole different vehicle. That looks like a vehicle that would have sold well to a variety of different buyers, except off-roaders. A good urban roadster. Too bad they fluffed up the design when they started production.
