| Post subject: | Painting Coil Springs... |
Hey all, just wondering what paint you recommend for painting coil springs. I will clean very well with a solvent then prime and paint. Are there issues with a hard paint cracking or doesnt it matter what I choose? Engine paint maybe? |

Painting a coil.. hmm.. that seem like it might not be the best idea.. I think the paint would crack, and you would have to keep re-painting them.. I have an idea.. not sure if it would hold out or work.. what if you use shrink wrap on the coils instead of paint.. It would be more work.. but it might last longer.. again just a thought.. |

Factory ones are painted - don't know what kind of paint - OME's are powdercoated. |

You could try por-15, don't know how it would do on springs, but it's a hard coating. |

I think that a hard coating would crack. I have our purchasing guy looking at rubberized paint chemistries. He called one of our vendors and said I could powder coat them blue for $125 for all four. |

That's bizarre, I was just wondering about this the other day. Anyway, they must be paintable; powder coating is probably the way to go. I don't know how flexible rhino liner is but it might work? I was also wondering about painting/coating the lower control arm and maybe the clevis up front, those are rusty looking things... |

Try finding expoxy based paint,it will not crack when the coil compress and extends.I'd stay away from powder coating, they have to bake that finish on and could weakin the spring.I know EMU coils are powdercoated but I'm sure they take that into acount when coating them and rating the spring rates. |

good point tjkj, but how much do they heat it up when they powder coat them? |

I wouldnt think powder coat baking would be anywhere near enough to mess with the sprint temper. Either way, Id rather not spend that much. I was thinking I could find a can somewhere local and do it myself. Ill prob just end up using an epoxy paint and hope for the best. Not like its even that visible.... |

POR-15 = Pour over Rust... That stuff is used extensivly in the restoration circuits to stop rust from spreading on older cars. This is the first time I've heard of it being considered for a spring. I don't know if it would work or not but it's worth a try I suppose. I'd recommend using powdercoating |
