We've had quite a cold snap here recently (-23F). I pulled out of the garage this morning and noticed oil under the front end. When I got home tonight I took a closer look and think both left and right pinion seals of the front axel are leaking.

I don't wheel this thing and have only 26,000 miles on it. She goes into the shop tomorrow.

Anyone else with a similar failure?

Ok, I dropped off this morning and await their call. I hope its only the seal and not a larger problem (ie. fractured housing)

Since its in and near the 30K I've asked them to change fluid in both axles and give me a price on changing the plugs and the induction clean they reccommended.

Is the induction clean and spark plug change to early?

Don't know about an induction clean, sounds like an easy way for them to make a quick buck but for plugs it is the perfect time. Considering the FREEZING stupid cold  you talked about, I won't even bother asking why you don't service it yourself.

The plugs are recommended every 30K miles so you are good there. I've had the FI system cleanout out once (probabaly around 36K miles and it seemed to help with my rough idle for a while but it's back now.

Sorry to hear about your front dif. I haven't heard of both sides failing like that before

Ok, got it back last night with new pinion seals. I also told them about a creaking sound coming from the rear. They isolated the problem to the front sway bar bushings and replaced them. It would seem that cant hear anymore but the good news is DC fixed it.

Wow...I might just move back to Wisconsin (my own homestate) to get service like that from D/C. It seems like everywhere else they like to poo on you. Wait, I just realized you might not have taken it to Jeep...that would explain all this non-sense of good customer-service from a D/C stealership

Well, here we go again

I pulled in the garage after church this morning and noticed the tell tale signs of dif fluid on the floor.

I crawed underneath and found fluid leaking out of both sides .... AGAIN!

Looks like I'll be calling my dealer in the morning.

Stay tuned for the continuing saga

One question though - I bought the KJ in July of 05, when does my 3year warranty expire? July or January of 08?

Ok .... got it back today.

This time the polished the ends of both left and right drive shafts to remove any burrs. Then they replaced the both pinion seals again. The mechanic is convinced he's solved the problem.

I just don't understand how both shafts would develop a burr at the same time and tear up their respective pinion seals. To coincidental to me.

I hope I'm wrong.

Stay tuned for more of the continuing saga......

i figured out why mine was leaking a little from the front after doing some hiway miles. i had filled it to the bottom of the fill hole instead of a little bit down.

Well, its been 4 days now and no leaks.

Both are doing fine.

We'll see how much longer they keep the oil in.
