Post subject:  Bike rack options?

Well, with spring seeming to be just around the corner, i'm in the market for a bike rack.

I know i dont want to go roof mounted.

Just something that can hold 2 bmx bikes, spare or hitch mounted.

What is everyone else using?

Why don't you want a roof mounted system? Seems to be the most practical..

I don't like the roof mounted ones because of all the lifting and pulling to get the bikes on top of the Jeep. Not to mention the reduced clearance if you've got to get somewhere with a low overhang.

I don't like the hitch style because of the swing gate - if I've got two bikes on the back and I need to get into the cooler you'll have to unmount the bikes, then the hitch mount.

I recently picked up the mopar spare tire rack and am looking forward to putting it through its paces in the spring.

I have a hitch mounted one and has a pin to make it fold down to clear the swing gate but the only think is it has to be empty to swing down obviously but it works good. I have a custom adapter to my receiver on the hitch to bring the rack out farther and up more for clearance. Ride downhill mtn bikes and shuttle up to the top of the mountain sometimes need the clears for 4x4.

I have this http://www.softride.com/product.asp?p=39 and it's the best rack I've ever owned. I had a spare tire one when I had a Wrangler and a roof one when I had a Cherokee. This is by far the best rack ever!!

I have a Thule Spare Me rack. It mounts to the spare tire mount and is easily removed when you don't need it. It was about $155.00 at my bike shop.

Thule or Yakima are the big two, but there are models from Performance Bikes. Just google for those companies. Make sure you use bicycles, not just bikes when googling.

I'm using the Mopar spare tire bike rack. Easy to get bikes on and off and it holds them very securely.

I am using a Swagman spare mount and it also comes off really quickly. I also fabbed up a vertical ski rack that fits where the upper tube of the bike frame would go into the rack. Works slick and was created from another ski rack I had around the garage. I also wanted the fully functioning gate and did not want to put the planks on the roof (I am a bit vertically challenged).

If you're riding BMX, what's wrong with the trunk? My trials stock bike (20" wheels, 1020mm frame length) fits with just the passenger side seats down. I will be getting a the towers to mount my yakima rack... and they do make a cantilevered setup for tall vehicles that reaches down to make the bike knee height to get off of tall vehicles...

(Hope this doesn't sound confrontational, I read the first post, and wasn't sure you were aware of all the "other" roofrack options. I will just have to be careful not to pull into my garage (My VW never saw the garage because it was full of VW parts until I go thte jeep 8) )

I have the Thule SpareMe as well and it is a very well built spare-mount rack. It fits two mountain bikes very well.

I got a trailer hitch type receiver from a local sporting goods store for either $50 or $99 (I forget which). it has a pin to allow it to tilt away. Only somewhat practical. But for occassional useage it's more than good.

They may a hinged hitch rack that opens like your tailgate does so it swings away while remaining fully loaded with bikes. check out www.etrailer.com and others.

Oh, and for the record, I think bikes and racks add too much weight for our tailgate's hinges (long term, anyway).
