Post subject:  KJ Tranny slippage?

So the auto tranny in my girlfriend's 04 liberty has been slipping on and off for a while. I definitely doesn't feel like a strong tranny.

A while back I changed the fluid in it (not the filter, long story, but we do actually have the correct one waiting to go in soon) but that didn't realy do much to help. I'm wondering if anyone with similar issues has got anything to say about it?

It's especially noticable when you're trying to hammer down on the highway. Accelerating from 45-50 up to 70-75 is not that great. You can't hammer on it, you ahve to do it gradually or the tranny won't be happy. Even just if you're trying to accelerate form 65 to 70, if you don't baby it just right, it slips. I have a 96 XJ with 140k on it 32" MTs and I hammer on the gas to accelerate really quickly onto the highway and mine goes,a nd the tranny doesn't feel like it's slipping. When mine does, I change the fluid, and it's fine. That doesn't work on the liberty.

I was wondering if adjusting the bands, if it has any??, would do the trick?? If so, does anyone have a manual that shows how to do it?? She's going to keep this liberty for a few more years and I want it to be in good shape, functioning wise. I don't want the tranny to be a dog, ya know!!

Also, my company has an 07 liberty which I just recently got a chance to start driving and I've noticed that the acceleration isn't as much of an issue on this newer one, although it doesn't feel really strong under hard acceleration, it's better than my girlfriend's 04.

Thanx for reading all of this, and thanx in advance for any advice people have!

Is it still under warranty?

What did the old transmission fluid look like? All automatic transmissions slip a little bit as that is how they work but if you are noticing a lot of slipage there should be indications in the color of the fluid. How many miles?

It's got about 60k or so. Never had any problems with it. Maintain it regularly, and my girlfriend drives it...so it's pretty much babied.

The tranny fluid was dark red, no chunks or pieces. There was a good amount of metal filings on the magnet, but nothing out of the ordinary.

?? No idea. But I doubt that this is something that the dealership will do anything about. When you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself!!

That is strange... Maybe a search will reveal other people with the same issues? My Liberty has about the same mileage abut it's the 45 series transmission instead of the 42 in your G/F's 04

Well, just an update for you all. This weekend we changed the tranny filter in my girlfriends 04 KJ. I think the problem is fixed, it doesn't slip nearly as much as before, it feels prety solid now!!! Fluid didn't seem bad...but whatever, it worked!

The first time when we couldn't change the filter, and just did the fluid, it didn't seem to make much difference. This time it made a difference!!

So just incase anyone is planning on doing a tranny fluid change on their KJ, here is some info for ya:

Get the largest drain pan that you can get. No drain plug :( And since the exhaust pipe hits the edge of the pan while coming down, it's really hard to get the oil to drain from just the corner. I made a mess!! Luckily I had a bunch of kitty litter!

You MUST use ATF+4, which you can't get everywhere. Specially designed for these new chrysler trannies, if you use anything else, you'll kill the tranny!!

Don't even bother trying to get the filter at an auto parts store. Go straight to the dealer with your VIN # in hand. If you do otherwise I guarantee that you'll get the wrong filter, more than once!

After dropping the pan and changing the filter, it took just under 5 qts of ATF+4 to get it to the proper level. This may vary a bit from year to year, this was an 04 KJ.......jsut be prepared with atleast 5qts when you do this. My XJs AW4 auto takes almost exactly 4qts for a filter change....so I'm glad we got that extra bottle!

That is all.

Just a FYI Wally world has genuine MOPAR ATF+4

You could try online for the inner filter / gasket and possibly the second filter (if all of the KJ's have 2 filters)
You can also pick up the ATF+4 from Murry's Discount Auto / Advanced Auto Parts

I'm also up for a fluid / filter swap as soon as I get motivated to do my 60K mile stuff.

Edit: here's a link to a kit from rockauto - http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframe ... 866k417601

Was that the first time the oil had been changed?

If so, thats the problem for sure. The fluid should NOT be changed when the tranny is slipping. That means its to late. The fluid should be changed every 30k as the owners manual states.

Careful. I don't think that is the correct kit for the newer transmissions. THey show the same kit for my '02 with the other transmission.

I suggest www.bulkpart.com for some more research. They show two different stock numbers. AlaCarte ordering there -- if you decide to buy from them, you'll need to get the gasket separately listed.

At least, I did that. The RTV, like stock, is of course an option.

You might want to also try a QUICK-LEARN if the fluid has been changed. The new Chrysler trans need to re-learn the CVI's if the fluid has been changed. Contrary to want everyone thinks, disconnecting the battery will not do a thing.

Check here.
