| Post subject: | Is 4WD Engaging???? |
Greetings all, I am new to this board (and to Jeep's). I purchased an 2003 Liberty Renegade about a month ago and had a 4WD question. When I lift the handle to engage 4WD HI, there is no noise at all, it is very quiet and does not even shake the truck. Is this normal? The Part Time indicator lights up, but I am not sure if I should physically notice something "engaging" to let me know that is is in fact on. Thanks for your time. |

If the light comes on, its most likely in 4wd. Why would the Jeep shake? Edit: WELCOME TO LOST!!!! |

I actually just thought that if something mechanical is locking together when shifting into 4WD, it would cause some type of noise or "shake". I am a complete newbie to this stuff, but have taken a real interest to it and would like to learn more about offroading and 4WD systems. The engineering that goes into these Jeep's is incredible. |

I have noticed a slight roar when in 4wd. No kind of vibration though. When you put it into 4wd, it sends torque to the front wheels. Even though you have it in 2wd, the front driveshaft and axle is still spinning. So 4wd simply applies torque to the front diff. |

Ahhhh, I think I understand now. So, when sitting still, shifting into 4WD won't make any sounds or anything because the torque is being sent to the front, not necessarily "locking" any mechanical parts together? That makes sense. See, ask a question, learn something new. Thanks guy's. P.S. Thank's for the welcome. I look forward to playing with the Jeep for years to come. I like the Jeep so much that I talked my Boss into buying one for his daughter, and she loves it. We are all planing on heading down to Camp Jeep this summer since it's here in VA., seems like a blast. |

just make sure you tell him about the ball joint recalls as well and get them replaced. there is some arguement about whether it is best to replace with moogs or not. |

I told them about that. The dealer tried to tell them that it was already performed, but we looked online and saw that it wasn't. They finally agreed with us and performed the work. |

I am not a fan of shifting in to and out of 4wd with the part time only or 241 case they tend to get stuck in neutral I have not had issues with the 242 or the one with full time option but we ,the wife and I, still like to shift it the same that is while rolling along slide tranny to N then pull up T-case to desired 4wd mode the trany to D for full time or 4hi and to 1 for 4lo most time when in 4lo you do not want the tranny shifting gears so you should go to 1 also when using 4lo you will be in a situation where a gear shift would be bad |

You won't hear anything sitting still because you usually need to be moving/rolling to shift from 2wd to 4wd. I notice a light tug in the wheel and the steering gets a little heavier feel. Also feel a light thump through the t-case shifter handle. One thing to remember, park it in 4WD if you expect to need 4WD to get moving. |

actually putting it into 2nd after putting into 4low is a little better especially in mud cause theres alittle less torque and I have found i get a little more traction. but just my experience. and if your new to 4wheeling, u should find u a nice dirt hill and try to go up it in 2wd and see if you can make it, then do it again in 4wd and feel the difference in how much traction and pull you get, just a thought. |
