Does anybody own this?
How does it hold up? Is there water resistance any good? How secure are the straps and fit? I'm planning a vacation, and because we're traveling with a 17-month old and a 4-year-old, we'll be bringing toys, porta-crib, etc. This leaves little room for actual luggage, so I'm considering a rooftop cargo bag. Due to limited use, I don't want anything that requires cross bars (additional $150 + rack/box). I want something that works with only the factory roof rails. I've looked at cargp bags in the 13-15 cubic ft. size by Thule and RoofBag, and they seem pretty nice. I trust the Thule reputation, and like it's lifetime warranty, but the RoofBag Cross Country seems like it might be more waterproof (as opposed to Thule Nomad's "water resistant"). Jparts prices the Jeep carrier in the same range as those two. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated. BTW, I don't have a hitch receiver, so a cargo platform is out of the question. |

I have considered the $20 one at Wally's for the 1 time a year I would use it. Can't help you on the others. The hitch hauler would still require weather proofing your gear though. |

Do you have a basket or anything up on your roof right now other than the rails? If you have a basket, then you can check these out: http://www.ems.com/catalog/product_deta ... 2608204065 They are more or less 100% waterproof. I went into a river with one of these in my pack (all my junk was packed in the drybad thank god) and everything came out completley dry except for a little bit of splash on my clothes from taking them out of the bag(with you would get from ANY bag). You could get a few of these and pack your stuff inside and put the baby gear in the cargo area. It now occurs to me that you could even just strap these to the roof rails on their own, no basket required. Just use a few of these: http://www.ems.com/catalog/product_deta ... 2608495675 Those straps are SUPER sturdy, I use them to secure everything inside my jeep when we go camping or anything. Hope this helps Edit: I'll rig my drybag to the roof rails of our KJ later on tonight when the vehicle gets home. I'm stuck with this stupid Rubicon all day while my father takes the KJ to work |

I have this one and love it! It sits perfect in my rack, it is hella waterproof, and a nice size too! You don't need a rack to mount it too, it will just attach to the roof rails. http://cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates ... id=0006494 |

I have one from Dicks sporting goods and a Walmart one, both have been through heavy rains with no leaking. If you were closer I let you use them, heck if you were closer I would throw my hitch and rear basket on for you! |

Do you not want a hitch carrier? I have one and its really handy for bigger things such as coolers or fire wood. It will make the Jeep sag more if you put alot of heavy stuff on it though. The road spray can be an issue. I usually wrap a tarp around the stuff if I know its going to rain or something. |

I used one similar, it worked great never leaking at all. The only draw back is it got bugs all over it, but nothing a little soap and water wouldn’t fix. I actually got mine at Target I believe it was on clearance for about $15.00; I wouldn’t pay more than $40.00 now that I know how inexpensive they are. I now have a roof basket but I still occasionally use it. |

When I shopped for a waterproof roof bag I went all over the place. I ended up finding the $15 job at Kmart to be the best deal for rooftop bag. It has all the straps and buckles you need to keep it well secured to the top of your truck without any cross-bars or anything like that. I also got some tool drawer liner material in a roll to lay down on the roof below the roof bag to keep it from scratching the roof paint. It has worked perfectly for me. And, on a longer trip, or if I know I'm going to be going through a MONSTER storm, I might think about giving the zipper seams a layer of duct tape protection. But I've never had to do that and I've never had ANY leakage. However, as has already been mentioned, make sure you fold the zipper cover flaps down. I have a bunch of waterproof bags, which I own because we kayak and canoe. It is possible to simply strap a number of these type bags to the roof, and they come in pretty big sizes. When I've done this in the past, I strap them down REALLY good, including a saftey rope through the D-ring. Personally, I'm a sucker for SeaLine bags because they have held up to some serious punishment for me. I did not buy the Thule bags because they are not certified for watersports. I won't stear you away from them because I love Thule quality on racks, but they are far from the experts on waterproof. SeaLine is a great manufacturer with decent prices. Check out Campmor.com for some clearance deals too. |
