Post subject:  Speedo/Stalling problems, please help ***FIXED***

I woke up this morning and started driving to work. My Speedometer did not leave 0. It also started stalling on me whenever I'd depress my clutch at speed. After a little while, the check tranny (I think) light came on. The yellow one on the top right of the cluster.

Here's the symptoms. The speedo always stays at 0. The Odo/Trip has not moved since this morning. Tach works normal. Driving at speed is fine until I depress the clutch, no lurching or anything, nice and smooth. When I depress the clutch, the RPMs drop like they normally would, but just keep on going down to 0. Let off the clutch out and it pop the engine back on, or starting it with the key works.

Any ideas?

Hey the speedo is hooked up at the back diff on the top. The e-brake line on the drivers side has been known to rub thru the wires to the speedo. Somewhere on the board there is another post about this with the part number for the plug and wire replacement. I should write this stuff down.

Check for water and salt in the plug (since we have had a lot of ice and snow). As for it stalling, they may be related may not. When the valve body gets dirty, the KJ doesn't idle correctly. Take it off and clean the ports and temp sensor.

What is the code. Key on and off three times push the trip button, you should get the code.

Catalytic convertor maybe?....I only say that because mine went out recently and my tranny warning light came on also (the way the check engine light blinks tells you if it is tranny/engine or not), but so did my traction control light too, no lurching or anything and rpms looked good, just anytime I would touch the gas there would be no power to the wheels or "gusto" if you will. Ended up with new cats, plugs and O2 sensors throughout.....5 days in the shop....

I was thinking that if the computer is getting no speed signal, and thinks the car isn't moving, then it might be saying "Hey, this is too much gas for a non-moving jeep" and lean it out to the point that it stalls.

I'll check the rear diff tomorrow and see if there is anytihng up with the plug/wires. Thanks for the tip.

As for the cat, I doubt it. I never had a stalling problem until this, and since the cat option wouldn't acount for the speedo staying at 0, I doubt that it's causing it.

If there was even a slight delay in the symptoms, maybe, but since the stalling, and speedo, started at the exact same tie, I think they are directly related.

Would a bad O2 sensor/wiring cause something like this?

well my speedo ended up falling to 0 after i lost all speed and was just coasting after the engine refused to let me accelerate....wasn't a fun time sitting on the edge of the road with the engine running and no power to any of the wheels...would accelerate at times and then cutoff power and then let me have a bit and then cutoff again...wasn't fun

nevertheless good luck with whatever is giving your Jeep grief..I always hate to see a sick Jeep...

I crawled under the back today. The wiring looks OK, but I can see how the e-brake cable could rub it.

I checked the engine code and got "P 0500" which according to http://www.jeepkj.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=325 means "Haven't heard from the speed sensor lately."

Which leads me to believe that my sensor is indeed shot in the rear diff. I have that spare rear, so I'll swap em out and see what happens.

You might want to peel back the wire protector alittle bit and check the wires again, mine did the same thing minus the stalling. My wires looked good to but when I peeled back the protector the wires had been rubbed through under the protector,go figure!

*Update*

I swapped out the speed sensor with my spare. Still having the problem.

I checked the wire path that my service manual PDF reports, but I'm not it's going to do any good.

Every wire schematic I can find shows that sensor going to, and ONLY to, the ABS controller, which I don't have. I can;t find a single reference to the rear speed sensor other than the ABS system.

You can try to reset the PCM for sh1ts and giggles.

Didnt you just put an ARB and new gears in? Maybe your problem is on the inside.

Might check the pins/wires on the connector for the sensor, might have some corrosion thus making it not have a good connection, worth a try.

It's fixed. I got under it again when I got home last night. I'm not sure what I did though. I took the wires completely out of the loom to inspect them. Checked them over well, checked the plug, plugged it back in and went for a test drive.

About 3 miles later, still not working, my door locks automatically locked. I looked down and the speedo was going. No more stalling either.

Who knows.

After another full day of crappiness after payign with the connector/wires going to that sensor, and exhausting all local resources, I made an appt with the dealership.

I am going to cry. Just rolled 90k miles and I have NEVER been to the dealer with it. I might as well start looking for a new project because after I pay them the $1000 they are going to want to fix it, it still won;t ever work right again.

That $1000 figure is just me being pessimistic. But I really don't want to go to a dealer. I have dealer service.

This thing is pissing me off. Today it works. I think it's the new land the wife and I bought.

When it worked Friday, it was after visiting the land to check the foundation. Sat and Sun it didn't work agian.

Then today I had to meet the Electric Co. Engineer to figure out what we're doing with the the power lines. It Didn;t work the whole way to the land, but when I was driving away, it worked. Been working all day.

OK, the Jeep spent 6 hours at the dealer yesterday, and only $150 later, it's fixed.

We were all sniffing at the right wire, but the wrong place. The yellow/blue wire that carries the signal back to the PCM from the read diff speed sensor was broken. It wasn't in the back by the e-brake though. It had worn through and broken under the driver's footwell carpet. Mechanic said that excessive mud and water caused it to wear through the insulation and eventually cause the wire to break (it's only 20g wire).

2 good things I spose...

1) My wife can't yell at me anymore becuase "I broke it" with all my electrical tampering.

2) The repair I tried in the back would have been successful since they repaired the front and my repair in the back didn't make it still not work!

I was really expecting it to be a whole lot more than $150

That is one strange failure... I'd be more inclined to say that wire chaffed through just do to the cheapness of Chryslers parts and not some mud and water. I mean, I've heard of water jet cutting tools but never a standing pool of water cutting something.
