Post subject:  Creaking noise when braking hard

I'm experiencing a creaking noise when I brake really hard. It only happens right as the vehicle is about to come to a stop, and only when it's coming to a stop fast.

I have a frankenlift and 31" MT/Rs on it.

Any suggestion? I'm going to try to re-lube the sway bar, but I remember that one making more of a squeak than a creak noise when it needed lube before.

Hmm, my 06 does this. It had the "new" balljoints from the factory. I will definantly have to check them out.

Mine has always done it. Fairly sure its the break pads since it comes with ceramic pads from the factory. Ever notice that you do not have any break dust?

Are we sure the pads are Ceramic? I thought that DCX used a really soft material to keep the squeaking complaints to a minimum on the Liberty... I would venture to guess that, if you are stopping hard, you are hearing the struts (shocks) compress or uncompress as a result.

My Liberty makes a bunch of weird noises now but it's OK... It is still running strong

Thats what Ive always read. My liberty has 25k on it and I cannot even tell the pads have started to wear.

I could be wrong though. :?

When I was having th brake squalling when wet thing going on, my dealer tech said that there were not ceramic. I asked about ceramic pads and the possibility of putting aftermarket ones on there, and he said they have some ceramic DCX pads that they put on "paying" customers that were of lessor quality, but for warranty, they had to do what DCX told them. They were supposed to come up with a different compound to quiet them down and the last batch they put on mine did just that.

So what other pad material will not make dust/makes noise? :?

Beats the crap out of me. But when I mentioned them to the tech, he was like...."NOOOOOOOOOO!!!" you don't want them. I always thought the open design of the wheel sort of kept the stuff washed out of there. Boy, when I put a garden hose on the Buick wheels, it looks like black mud washing out of them.

Man my first set of pads on the Liberty were horrible for brake dust (at least to my standards - I like things clean)

My second round I went for the Ceramic pads by Carquest or someplace similar and they were fantastic but I started to chew up the rotors because of some heavy hauling and stopping that I did.

Now, I've switched back to the Mopar pad (put on by the dealer this time) and I've got almost no brake dust [like the ceramic] but in a softer compound that doesn't bite as hard...?

That is a lot of brakes in 56K miles -

To the OP / I bet the noise goes away when it warms up this spring... all of my noises seem to dissapear as the plastic parts in the interior start to expand with the temperature

Sleeve84028...dont you have the drum rears like me since you have an 02'? Mine makes all KINDS of noises when the rear wheels get wet or I take it wheeling. They squeak and squaller and make all sorts of crazy noises that are very annoying. But my KJ still breaks really good. Only downside is the owner must have put cheap pads on the fronts because my front wheels are always showing brake dust.

I'm pretty sure that the pads for the Jeep Liberty are metallic and they do make a lot of dark reddish dust and some strange noises sometimes.

My brakes do exactly what you've described. Always though it was just because of prake pad contamination. It's funny it fools people into thinking I have anti lock brakes - it almost makes the same sort of noise.

Just the brake pads, nothing to worry about. My Jeep has done and lot of other vehicles do it also.

My '05 is all stock and I have the same thing. A low pitched creaking sound right when coming to a hard stop. I think it's the pads.

My 07 stopped its early morning brake moan (supposedly fixed for 07 ). However, harder/quicker stops, right as the vehicle comes to a stop, my 07 creaks too. Sure as heck better not be balljoint related

EDIT: My brakes have creaked on harder stops from day one with 2x miles on the clock, and do it to this day (3xxx miles)

yea its probably the breaks.. mine do it too now that I thought about it.
I just like blaming the sway bar for all of the noises.. its cheaper and requires only a shot of silicone..

My jeep does the same low creeking noise too. I took it to the dealer and they put a part on order for it (Pads) and said that when DC was building the KJ, they had some kind of miscommunication with the company who suppilied the brake parts. therefore they had to go with some off brand name... this is what the dealer told me... so i dunno if its true... as long as it stops when i ask it to...
