Post subject:  Keep Jeep from Getting Stolen

I'm all out of big money.

What's a cheap but somewhat effective way of not losing my new Liberty?
Is The Club thing any good? I don't even know anyone who's ever had a vehicle stolen. Is it still something to worry about with all of the computerized keys and new technology?

I'll be parking at trailheads and fishing holes, so I know I'll get the broken window sooner or later unless I leave it unlocked, but hopefully I can do something to keep it from disappearing completely.

Any ideas?

A live Diamondback rattler or King Cobra lying on the drivers seat would do the trick. You would need to build up your poison immunity (like Dread Pirate Roberts).

A fake ticking bomb (sitting on the drivers seat or dash) with wires running to the door might work.

Remove a spark plug at night. Not practical but effective. Remove the battery terminal but the thief might pop the hood and attach it. Also not practical.

The different real versions of The Club is supposed to be really good.

At campsites, take two plugs out.

Find the wire that leads from the ignition "key" to the battery and splice in a "kill switch" someone along that pathway. Locate it out of sight so only you know where it is under the dash or steering column.

Sounds good if I could find the spark plugs. I haven't kept up with technology, and the other day when I looked for them I couldn't find them.

Can you actually do an Ignition kill switch in modern cars w/o killing the electronics nowadays?

I did it with my 1966 Oldsmobile Starfire but I always thought a kill switch would be a problem with a modern car.

Your Jeep already has transponder in the key fob. Engine will not run for more than 5 seconds or so without a correct transponder, even if someone used correctly-cut key or hot-wire it.

Theoretically speaking.

Isnt that only if you have the security group? I thought different color rubber backs to the keys ment different things on Chrysler vehicles? My audio guy would ask me what color the back of my key was to the KJ to tell if I had the security group (I was thinking about Viper at the time).

Which is one reason if you want to put a remote start on a Liberty w/Sentry Key Immobilizer System is so expensive, at least compared to one that doesn’t have it.

Someone already said it - if a theif really wants your car, they will take it. No matter what you do:

1) You install an alarm - the theif has a magnet to disable it
2) You use the club - the theif cuts the steering wheel to remove it
3) You unhook the battery - the theif uses a flatbed to haul your vehicle away...

The best possible thing you could do is install a low jack system so that you can recover it quickly IF it was to be stolen. Don't put a fancy radio in the dash, never leave anything expensive in plain sight and always lock the doors. Other than that, you should have good insurance and hope nothing happens to your car.

The sentry key system comes with a little blinking light in the insturment cluster doesn't it? Mine blinks and the idiot light on the dash (for sentry key) comes on so I'm not too worried about my Jeep being hot wired.

I have had a car stolen from me... it's not too fun

I concur with the "If he want's it, he'll get it". I always pull my HU cover off, my remote on my steering wheel also comes off. I never have CD's in sight. My windows are tinted and with my shelf in the back, you can't see what I am carrying. You can only minimize the risk. So what do we do with all the exterior mods???

The Sentry Key system is standard feature in all recent Liberties. I just went to the Jeep site and checked, and it looks like all '07 Liberty models already come with Sentry Key as a standard feature. This isn't the case for older KJs of course, but since MacAttack has an '07, I just mentioned it.

MacAttack, when you lock the door with the keyfob, is there a blinking red LED somewhere in the instrument cluster?

But you know what, Trunk Monkey is the answer!

More Trunk Monkey videos.

i think a Manual Transmission Liberty is the last thing on a thieves list

the ones that you would actually keep from stealing it with the club are to lazy to shift gears

Maybe you can also put the transfer case in neutral (and apply the e-brake) ... how many typical car thief would know what to do to get a Jeep out of that?

since it is a stick you could tap into the Clutch switch and keep the car from starting that way.

but nothing keeps them from dragging it away on a flatbed or vandalizing it

Heck one of the reasons I like my KJ being modded out is that it sticks out...thus if it gets stolen it will be easy for someone to say, yea I saw that liberty with the roof basket and spare tire on the roof and whatever else it's over there...police go and get the guy and I get my rig back eventually

High center it on a rock and winch yourself out every morning.

Well you could take it away on a flatbed, but with a snake inside, they won't be able to get inside.....LOL!

Nerve gas cyclinder that shoots the gas into the compartment when the vehicle is broken into or an explosive that detonates when the vehicle door opens due to theft. One less bad guy to steal.

You will deter the basic thief with simple stuff, but if a thief is intelligent and determined enough, they will steal it.

Locks are to keep the honest man out.

I don't have any blinking light. What exactly does the stock Liberty include for security? The manual doesn't really explain it too well. I know the computerized key needs to be used or it shuts off in 3 seconds. Other than that do the horns honk or anything if someone breaks in?

OK the LED may not be blinking ... I forget. It's definitely in the cluster and will come on when you use the keyfob to lock the car.

Now, here's the fun part ... if you use the keyfob to lock the car (and open/close driver side door) then any attempt to unlock the car without using the keyfob WILL sound the horn. This happens regardless of whether someone inside the car unlocks it, or if you walked up to it and insert key and turn.
