| Post subject: | Are CB'ers being drama queens??? |
I've been EXTREMELY lazy about setting up my CB. I first mounted my antenna where my am/fm mounts. Didn't like that because I hit the garage opening. I stopped right there for about 5 months. It wasn't until last week when I drove the blizzard that went through the midwest last week. Highway 77 from Lincoln, NE to Sioux City, IA was not what I considered fun but since I29 was closed, I had no other choice. So on my 5 hour journey that would normally be an hour and half, I decided it would be nice to have my CB going because I could have communicated with the semi's ahead of me when we were stopped because the drifts were so high and bad that it was only a one laner at times. I have decided on mounting the antenna on the back passanger side right above my taillight with a quick disconnect so I can get into my garage. I have a firestik kit and they're website with some local CB shops seem to be saying that I shouldn't run it until I get it tuned. Is this correct. All I have left to do is connect the power and ground to my Cobra 75wx and it's ready. I tested the cable for the correct continuity and it's right. Can I turn it on without blowing my cb up? I don't want to blow it up but geez, installing my HU was simple compared to the 'what if's' of the CB radio install. Thanks for the help guys. |

I have the same CB - never had it tuned actually i'm on my second CB - same model 1st one the mike died on me while going to MOAB - maybe the altitude in Denver had something to do with it? - it died right out of Denver. But, you do not need to have it tuned - just make sure you followed install instructions and you are done. By the way.... listening those truckers in IA & NE on our way to MOAB was a pain in the ear - too much garbage going on there |

Hey cheetos, that guy is kinda right about your CB.It needs to be "Matched".Or in laymens terms, the antenna needs to be adjusted with an SWR meter. If you have a radio shack in your area, they will usually do it for you.If not,I think you can buy a cheep SWR meter for about 20.00.It will have instructions on how to adjust your antenna.I don't know how long you can run it without adjustments, but it is hard on your finals(drive outputs in your radio).Surely you know of a CB nut that will have a meter, and will do you a favor. |

Yes you really should have the standing wave set. It will preform much better, be clearer when you talk and like LilredLibby said you will not blow the finals. I have run CBs since back in "the day" and have seen people not set the standing wave and paid for it by blowing up their radio. It will not just BLOW UP but rather just quit working. No matter what some say trust me and get it set. |

Tommudd hit it perfectly. Get'er done! You can listen all you want, just don't transmit without having the SWR checked. KJ-BOL: the altitude will not do anything to a mic. Something else went wrong. Terry |

KJ-BOL: the altitude will not do anything to a mic. Something else went wrong. Terry Yeah, "something" like not getting it tuned... |

Hey KJbol, if you remind me prior to MOAB, I will bring my SWR meter and we can hook you up right |

You know what might be kind of interesting. If everyone on L.O.S.T. had a modified CB we could have an unofficial "channel" somewhere way down below channel #1 for any group get togethers. No locals would be talking there for the most part and no skip bothering us. You could also do the same thing above Ch. #40, but that area is supposed to be for SSB whereas below 1 is supposed to be for AM. Then there is the problem of some radios that are just to hard to modify. Just rambling thoughts Terry |
