Post subject:  Max is Payload 1150lbs - Help With Weight of Accessories.

Did a few searches but can't seem to find any numbers either here, or on the web. Here is the deal - I'm going to be doing some towing this summer and I need to figure out how much I've reduced my payload capacity of the Jeep by the addition of skids, boulder bars, and front mount hitch.

Also, Jeep lists the payload capacity of all Liberties at 1150lbs, whether they come with a rear hitch, running boards, whatever from the factory. Are MOPAR skids in the calculation too??? This makes a difference because currently, with 4 people in the Liberty plus accessories added I think I only have enough payload left for the tongue weight of the trailer with NO additional cargo.

Here is what I've added:

MOPAR roof rails.
MOPAR gas tank skid.
MOPAR transfer case skid.
MOPAR transmission skid.
MOPAR engine skid(factory installed half weight).
All J's Boulder Bars (longer 2005 ones).
Reese Front Mount Hitch.

Can anyone verify the weight of the above items and/or help with what is actually included with the base weight on the Liberty before the max payload is calculated? Curb weight is listed at 4296lbs, GVWR at 5600llbs, difference is 1304lbs, yet max payload is 1150lbs??? To me, the numbers just don't add up. Payload is stated to not include the weight of the drive yet sooooooooo.

Just a little help would be cool as this post has gotten WAY too long... 8)

You gotta figure that those numbers have safety margins built in and take lots of factors into account much like estimated gas mileage. I doubt that going 200lbs over stated allowance is going to make any difference on the road. Now if you were offroading and slamming it over rocks and through gullies, I'm sure there would be some concerns.

Curb Weight: Is the entire weight of the vehicle (fuel, accessories, options & oil) but doesn't include the weight of the driver or any occupants. Thus this is the weight of the Liberty while it sits in your drivway or parking spot (next to the curb)

GVW: Is the entire weight of the vehicle + occupants & fuel. This is the maximum amount of weight that the suspension is designed to handle and should not be exceed

Thus the "Actual Payload" of a vehicle is supposed to be GVW - CW = Payload

Payload is the actual amount of "stuff" you can carry inside the vehicle. This figure should include all of your passengers + the drivers weight. So in your case you will need to factor in the added weight of the other stuff you have put on your Liberty to calculate the maximum allowable number

don't know if that helps at all...?

Edit: I also wanted to add that a gallon of automotive grade gas weighs around 6.5 pounds (not taking into account the changes in weight associated with temperature) but 18 gallons x 6.5 pounds = 117 pounds of gas on a full tank.

I just load mine down till it squats good then readjust the headlights down add some air to the tires and go! I know I was over moving all my wifes stuff to Boston but didnt have any problems at all. Thats with only enough room inside for us to sit, rack piled up 3 foot high and over 225/250 lbs hanging off the rear! Now if you pile the back full of gold bars and then pull a 10000 lb trailer you may have problems, if you have to do that call me I will move your gold bars for you!
