Is there any purpose to the lower, red portion of the taillight below the backup lamps? I thought maybe mine were burned out but in watching other Libertys they never seem to light. |

It's for the Euro guys...their bottom part lights up and stays lit up whilst driving I believe....at least that is my theory... |

Are you talking about the reflector in the bumper or the reflector on the taillight housing itself? The reflectors in the housing are there so that when your car is parked on the side of the road, at night, someone can see it. The ones in the bumpers I always thought they were like rear-fog lights so that people could see you in low light situations...? |

Yup, thats correct. They are called rear fogs. |

I wish we had rear fogs over here. Makes a huge difference, although they can be really annoying if people leave them on when it's not foggy. |

Basically they are bright lights in that empty spot. As bright as brake lights. http://www.driveandstayalive.com/articl ... lights.htm That page mentions my other major issue with North American driving... red indicators. |

This is an interesting topic. I believe any lights that can make your vehicle more visable in fog/snow is a good idea. I'm going to change all my lights to LED's for that reason. Terry |

What I was talking about originally is that the Liberty tail light has several areas from top to bottom. The top of the lens is RED and is seen as a tail light, turn signal or brake light. Next down from the top is a clear lens that is the backup light. Finally there is another red portion on the bottom that does not light (at least in North America) and seems to fill no function. Now perhaps it does reflect at night from oncoming headlights but most rear red tail lens do that anyhow plus the light shines through from a bulb as well. Thanks for the replys. Probably that fog light issue but how is the effect in Europe any different than driving with the headlights on and the tails showing. Is it brighter like a brake light? |

Yup, something like 21W instead of 5W for taillights. In thick fog it makes a HUGE difference. Next time you drive in fog take a look at how easily you can see the brake lights a long way off and compare to the near invisible taillights at the same distance. Considering some of the extreme weather conditions over here, I'm just baffled as to why stuff like this doesn't get adopted. If anything, the fashion seems to be going towards obscuring the safety features (obscure indicators up front, no side flashers, all red at the rear, no fogs). |
