Is there a guage that will warn you if your tranny is getting too hot? I'm not too experienced with this stuff so the following may be a dumb question: What does the main temperature dial on the console measure? I guess it's the engine temperature, but where is it measuring this temperature from, and does it have anything to do with the transmission temperature? |

Autometer also has trans (fluid) temperature gauges. Very nice and accurate, but you do pay a little for the name. Also, the Liberty has a warning light in the insturment cluster that comes on if the fluid temp gets to hot for the sensors liking... Edit: I think you are asking about the temperature gauge that is next to the speedometer? This gauge measures the temperature of the coolant fluid that circulates through the engine block and radiator (via some large rubber hoses.) There is a sensor that is partially submerged in the fluid that converts the heat to a voltage, which is then transmitted to the gauge to report a reading. This gauge should always be point to the middle of the temperature range after the vehicle (coolant) is warmed up... |

There is an idiot light for the trans on the dash and AFAICT it comes on fairly early when the 42RLE gets hot. (or at least there is on my 03 & 04 KJ's) I had the trans temp light come on while wheeling my 03 on one of my first trips w/ it. I was pulling a long steep grade up a loose hill and the light came on. (FWIW I was in 4Hi, 1st trip and I didn't know any better then) I panicked as I know what kills an automatic trans so I got on the CB and let the leader know I was stopping to allow it to cool. I was told not to worry and that we were close to a stopping point. When we got stopped I checked the trans fluid and the level was fine. It looked clean and fresh and didn't smell burnt at all. Even though there is a small trans cooler on the 03-newer KJ's, I added in a larger aftermarket cooler just in case because I knew I would be towing a pop-up tent trailer in the future. I also converted over to Amsoil fluid as I trusted it way more than the factory fluid. I never had the light come on again on either of my KJ's so I am no longer worried about it. (my 04 only has the factory cooler) sorry for the long post, just thought I would share my experience on this matter. |

How hard is it to actually install a temp gauge for the tranny? What all is involved? |

I think one of the "easiest" ways is to get a maniold that installs inline w/ the hot side cooler line. There is a tap on the manifold to install a temp sensor. I think allyrand did one this way (IIRC). I saw the manifold through summitracing.com once but never tried doing the install. http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch ... 4294845487 |
