When I was learning to drive my brand new 2007 Manual I did some dumb things. -I was riding the clutch so bad for the first couple weeks that I smelled burning, very noticeable one day. -A couple times I have come to a stop and forgot I was in gear, so the Jeep just did that horrible thing where it dies and shakes and clunks as it dies. What kind of damage did this probably do? I'm much better now, but did I take years off my clutch or anything else? |

You probably took some life off of it but as long as it is not slipping while accelerating it should be okay. Stalling it probably didnt hurt anything either. Be nice to your jeep. |

Just like when a brake shoe gets hot, it could glaze over and start quealing, or slip at first,or.............do nothing out of the ordinary. Like Jeger said, if it works fine, now that the learning curve is over, you are OK. They are pretty tuff to begin with. A few mistakes aren't a death sentence. |

By the way I've driven a stick shift for the last 14 years, and I know how to drive one. Never even had to replace the clutch. Is the manual supposed to be like I described it? Does anyone want to buy it? Ugh !!!!!! And you're sure you know how to drive a stick shift??? |

Well I'll admit it sure doesn't seem like it, but yes I do know how to drive a stick. The first month with this vehicle the clutch and shifting was horrible, so I thought I must not know how to drive a brand new modern clutch, so I just kept trying different methods and one thing that worked was holding the clutch for a longer time in 1st gear to prevent the very bad jerky, jolty ride I had. Then one day I started smelling burning and immediately ditched that method. Now after some more miles the vehicle is shifting much better and I am driving like I always used to. I guess something had to be broken in. I know it seems like I can't drive a clutch, but believe me it was horrible for the first 2-3 weeks, so I thought I needed to change my driving method. |

You've probably left the clutch glazed and confused by your driving style. |

I nominate MacAttack as the official L.O.S.T. Jeep-o-chondriac (similar to hypocondriac, but he's always worred there is something wrong with his tranny) Mac, seriously, have you ever driven a manual before? You said in your first thread that you had, and almost every day since then you have strated a new thread about either the manual transmission sucking, or something being wrong with it. Just enjoy the jeep and put aside enough to have $500 to get a new clutch in another 50K miles and stop asking the same questions. -Mark |

Just go out and burn your tires off a couple times. You will feel better and realize the clutch is fine. |
