Post subject:  Liberty Vs. Grand cherokee or Wrangler

I enjoy listening to a local auto talk show in which a couple of mechanics field auto questions, which is pretty good (The "Auto Answer Man" AM 1600, Denver area, 10:00-12:00 Saturday mornings). One of the mechanics made the statement "The grand cherokee is junk, but the Wrangler is bullet proof." My question is : Where do you think we as Liberty owners fall? Are we more like a wrangler, or are we more like a Grand cherokee mechanically speaking?
Thanks for your opinion.

Depends on what he means by 'junk.' Does he mean over-all its junk, or offroad its junk? If he means over-all, then I must disagree. You must be careful listening to people chat on the radio. Many times its only opinions flying around and nothing more.

I personally do not like GM. I may call everything GM makes garbage, but is it true?... no, GM actually makes some fairly well built and reliable vehicles.. I still do not like them though. 8)

I think he just meant that the grand cherokee is in his shop quite a bit for repair, and is therefore not very tough, where as the wrangler is very solidly built and designed to last and last....I like to think we are closer to the wrangler (with the exception of the LBJ's of course) than the grand cherokee.

The thing is that Grand Cherokees will end up in the shop more often than Wranglers, but you need to remember than MANY Wranglers will be worked on by their owners rather than going into a shop.

We have a KJ, a WJ, and a JK. None of them have had any major problems to date, and the WJ is just as capable offroad as the KJ (they're both stock). The WJ flexes better because of it's SFA, but the KJ has a bit more ground clearance. None of them are Junk, all of them are Jeeps. Our last WJ (went out on lemon law actually) was posessed...it was constantly having problems, but other people that I know that have WJs haven't had any problems, just like us with our current WJ. I don't care what this guy on the radio said or what his education is, Grand Cherokees aren't junk. You're more like a KJ mechanically speaking, all of the different jeeps have their own model-specific problems. KJs seem pretty reliable to me, but then again, so does our WJ, which is obviously junk since some clown on the radio said so.

My 2004 Buick Century isn't junk. It has a dated design, and isn't made anymore, but it gets 33 mpg and is a comfort to drive. Never been in the shop once in over 3 years.

You also got to remember that Grands usually have all the bells and whistles which is just that much more to go wrong. The wranglers as stated are mostly modified before the first oil change, but that could all change with the '07 JK's.They have alot more electrical crap in them that is going to malfunction(ESP) and be in the shop alot. The KJ is a all around good vehicle,a compromise between the 2,that's the reason I got a KJ,any idiot can built a TJ but it takes more time and skill for a KJ.And plus I like to be different.

Yup, GM makes some good stuff, Ive just never been a fan. Im all Mopar. 8)

My family personally owns four jeeps. We have a 94 grand with 160k that mostly gets driven by anyone that needs something to drive. Dad drives it alot since he doesnt really have his 'own' vehicle besides his work truck. Anyway, we never had any major problems with it.

My brother drives a 99 Cherokee with 60k miles. Its never had any work on it besides a bad window regulator.

My mom drives an 06 Grand Cherokee but its really to new to say anything about it. They drove it to Daytona and Tampa beach Florida(same trip) without any problems. They put around 2k miles on it without problems.

And of course I drive a liberty and Ive never had any problems besides the Balljoints. My drivers side had alittle play in it after 15k. I went ahead and put some moogs in it. I also had a recall for the rear window glass popping open and had a sensor in the passenger seat go bad(caused air bag light to come on). Other than that, its been trouble free and Ive had it offroad many times. 8)

I have had 2 Liberty's and both have had the best fit and finish of any of the many DCX products I have ever owned. The CRD had a few engine bugs but the engine is bleeding edge. My 02 was never in the shop. The Liberty is probably the highest quality vehicle DCX makes. My dad has had a couple grands and they weren't as reliable as the Liberty. Not that they were bad just took a little more mainenance.

My apologies to Grand cherokee owners. I should have realized that there were several mopar gear heads and grand cherokee owners here and that they would take offense. None was intended. In fact, when I was listening to the show this past Sat., the same mechanic stated " the only weak point in the grand cherokee is the older auto trannies. With the newer trannies they are very good." I don't know why he made the "grand cherokees are junk" statement the week before. He really knows his stuff, and he definitely is no "clown." I take offense to that statement because he has taught me a lot about auto maintenance and repair....
Anyways, this is my first experience with mopar, and we did buy a new chrysler town and country '06 at the same time, and I must say that so far I am completely satisfied with both vehicles. Previously, I was a ford man...
To me, the Liberty has been the best, most fun vehicle I have ever owned in 30 years of driving(except for maybe my first vehicle, a '70 Nova SS with a hurst on the floor that could get rubber in 3 gears).
