I know the rating is 1500 lbs.

Question is, how accurate is this ratio?

I'm starting a car request business and will need to tow cars (1 car at a time) on a trailer for a few hours. Looks like I'm going to need to upgrade to a CRD or truck eh?

Payload is the amount of weight the Jeep can hold, not tow. Thats with gear and passengers.

Thanks! I'm used to 2wds so I didn't have to know all these towing specs haha.

what the hell does 2wd have to do with towing

personally i wouldn't use a liberty to tow cars with. yes it can probably do it, but i doubt the transmission will like you, and you might have some stability problems

I'd get at least a 1/2 ton truck. Ideally a 3/4 ton if you are going to do it often

Take it easy bud. :)

Sometimes we all are not as experienced as others. And usually a 4wd can tow more than a 2wd..

Donnie, if you plan on towing anything over 2500lbs, I would make sure the trailer has its own brakes, a WD setup, and most importantly a anti-sway setup. Make sure that you position the car on the trailer so that it does not put to much tongue weight on the Jeep, but also doesnt take weight off the Jeep. It is a good thing to have some weight on the Jeep to help with stability. :)

What type of cars do you plan on towing?

I've used my liberty to tow my Mustang around with a car dolly at least 3 times now. It's not too horrible - but you really should pay attention to what you are doing. Keep the speeds low and listen to jeepsters advice about a trailer brakes, weight distribution and antisway equipment.

Good luck!

I'm from the show truck scene, I wasn't even thinking of towing a dam thing with my old truck. If I ever do towing I take my Dads Hemi, but I'm going to be doing this as a job this summer so I need my own transportation. Ideally yes, I would love a 2500 but I need to get some money coming to make the step up from the liberty.

Basically everything. Whatever the customer wants, that they can't find. Vintage, exotics, could just be a regular old car that someone can't find. Thanks for the help though!

what gears do you have in your liberty

3.55 or 3.73

either way if you really want to try and tow cars often you may want to get a HUGE tranny cooler and regear it.

what kind of trailer are you going to use?

2k lb trailer + 4K lb Car = 6000 lb

I'm figuring about two cars a month, so it's not too often. It will take a while before I get a real customer base, but I'm in college so I figure it's perfect because I don't have financial obligations ya know. I'm going to use a double axle not inclosed car trailer, nothing too fancy.

I know what your saying about the 6000 lbs. Kinda scary.

Depending on what type of car you put on the trailer the Liberty (as a tow vehicle) could do really well or it could burst into flames. 5,000 pounds is probably pushing the absolute safety limit in these things as far as stopping, and driveability goes. The liberty is a mini tank - but I don't know if I'd use it like a tug boat that often.

I'm not saying that you can't tow cars with the liberty but I didn't know that you were planning on doing this as a job... You're seriously going to lower the time between crictical component failures with that continual weight on the frame.

Think shocks, brakes pad, rotors, lots of oil and probably transmisison parts.... Will you need to have some sort of license to operate as paid transportation?

Totally agree, although I doubt my combined weight will be 5000 lbs most of the time. I'm 90% positive I don't need a licence. I believe it depends on you state and the weight your towing, which I'm not heavy enough, that you have to have a CDL.

If you do not tow in any mountains or big hills, you should be just fine towing over 4k.. :)

Just be sure to lock out O/D and maybe even keep it in 2nd gear when starting out.. Then as the rpms go over 3k, let off the gas some and shift it into D(3rd gear since O/D is locked out).. That would help keep the tranny from shifting so much and letting off the gas some keeps the tranny from slipping so much.. That shift kit would be a nice add-on also. 8)
