Post subject:  Grating noise when turning wheels

Hi

I have a grating noise when I reverse and turn the wheels sharply, especially when pulling out of my driveway. The driveway has a slight slope to it. The sound happens when reversing in both directions.

Could this be related to the ball joints - I am still waiting to have mine done.

How many miles on the Jeep? Maybe the cv joint(s) in the front axle.

It is a 2002 3.7 and I currently have 59 000 miles.

My Jeep is going in for a major service next month - only time I could get a booking. In their infinite wisdom, DC in Cape Town have opened a "Lifestyle Center" and amalgamated the three Jeep workshops we had into this one dealer. It is a one-stop shop for Chrysler, Mercedes, Mitsubishi and Smart products. Problem is that it takes you at least 4 weeks before you can get your vehicle into the workshop.

Hopefully it is something my warranty will cover - it expires in May.

I thought of that since it does sound like a tire rubbing against the body, but I have the standard size tires fitted. The other thing is I started noticing the noise after I got the Jeep back from the panel beaters. Had a fender-bender where I sent a small Toyota flying across an intersection

Damage to the Jeep was limited to the grille and front bumper - as far as I could see there was nothing damaged in the wheel wells. I think next time I hear the noise I should stop and check the tire clearance in the wheel well. The panel beaters could have stuffed up something - the noise was not there before they repaired the vehicle. It was nearly two months after the accident when they worked on the vehicle and I did not hear it in that period.

The steering wheel also started shaking slightly above 50 mph. I had new Cooper tires fitted in December and all wheels were balanced and alignment was done.
