Has anyone else been following the World Height Record attempt over on the ROF site? They went to the top of Ojas del Salado , the worlds highest volcano located in Chile, in 2 Wrangler Rubicon Unlimiteds. Its pretty interesting and some of the shots are amazing.
They havent released the final height yet but I am sure that there will be commercials etc. before long. I think they said KIA and some other company was trying it also. But they drove a "mini van" engine as high as you can drive!
Just found it interesting.

I'm guessing you get about 2 miles to gallon up that high?

"Well shucks", if a mini van engine can get that high, then Everest should be no problem for a 4.0, a used up one at that hee hee.

So why did he stop there? Couldn't he go any further up the hill or did the engine finally call it quits due to the lack of oxygen?

Cool to me. The highest I can drive in California is 12400 feet at the Barcroft high altitude research station on White Mtn. A track continues to the 14200 summit, but it's closed to vehicles, except the snowcat they run over spring snow. Looking forward to one day doing Pikes Peak and Mount Evans at 14K, and 4WD run on Colorado's Mosquito and Argentine Passes at 13K.

VW had the title for a while

http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1837773

IMHO for VW to have it is much more impressive than ever seeing a Jeep at the top of that list.

Not to hi-jack this.....but we have been keeping close tabs on global vehicle feats for a number of years now.

We, The Overland Expedition Group will be doing something in the summer of 2008.

In 2007 we are attending Moab Utah to train for our 2008 trip.

Why Moab? It is rugged and open and has climate extremes. Not to mention it is closer than our 2008 destination.

In 2008 we will be crossing the southern edge of Canada to promote our journey and raise awareness and funds for our charity...the World Wildlife Fund.

Once we reach Denali Alaska.....we will travel East across the lower 1/3 of all Northern Territories....no roads, or signs....just wide open landscape for 3000 kms.

I hope that you will all be following our pursuit.

Our vehicles of choice, which it makes it relevant to this thread, is the JK Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. We will have two of these for this journey as we have tried and tested many others, and these are simply the best vehicle for the job.

The motor is fantasticly equipped for this journey, and the standard features of the 2007 Rubicon are unmatched in a factory vehicle. The overall rigidity and torque capabilities are also unmatched.....and we have truely tested these things.

A great vehicle for an exceptional journey!!
