Post subject:  Help - Torn Inner CV Boot

I need some advice.

I just found that my inner (closest to the front differential) cv boot is badly torn, and grease is everywhere.

What should I do?

How much for the dealer to replace the boot? How difficult is it to replace the boot myself? Do part stores carry these boots?

Please advise. Thanks.

Get a Haynes manual at your local parts store. It details (sort of) the removal and instalation or the boot and you should be able to get the boot at the parts store as well or not very much at the dealer. You do need a few less common tools, a clamp cutting tool and a 36 or 35 mm socket. Oh buy grease too! It is a bit of work the first time but gets easier each time you have to take that apart.

Se7enLC,

Thanks for the info. The dealer has mine on the lift as I type. Did you do anything in particular to tear your boot? I have about 20,000 miles with my Frankenlift. I am concerned that the lift is putting too much stress on the boots.

The dealer is always going to be extremely overprice for repairs.

Most places would be able to replace the whole shaft along with new boots on both ends for about 300-350. That whole shaft is only about 150-200 dollars including new boots and the labor is only about 1 hour.

I have the same concern. I had just put my frankenlift a couple months before when mine happened

Dealership refused to cover the boot under warranty of course, because of the "extreme angle". I believe it - if it were not for the lift, there's no way that boot would have torn.

Dealer replaced boot for $268, which included an alignment. The new boot is not as pinched as the other side. If the clamps are cut off, can the cv boot be slid up the shaft so that the boot is not pinched as much?

To anyone with a lift:
I would check both sides of your suspension for a problem I had that may cause your boots to tear. Jack both sides up to get the front suspension at full droop and check to see if any suspension components are resting on the boot itself. When I took my Jeep in for a t-case issue, the mechanic noticed, when he put my Lib on the big lift, that even with the swaybar on, both sides had the clevis (bottom of strut assembly) resting on the boot, pushing it in. I could imagine this happens to some other people who haven't noticed it, and could cause a tear and/or other damage to the boot/axle. I have the original version of the Frankenlift, and that was with stock a-arms. Al's Arms fixed that problem for me. That was the only problem I had with the Frankenlift, and it didn't actually cause any damage that I can tell. I am thankful that the new arms don't allow the contact, though, cause it looked like it would eventually have worn down the boot at the very least from the steel clevis rubbing on the rotating rubber boot.
