You used to be able to pull the trouble code out of the instrument cluster.

Key-Off turn to Key-On,
Back to Key-Off, then Key-On
Final Key-Off then leave the key in the on postion.

If the newer Liberties still have this feature, your DTC will be displayed in the trip/odometer screen. If there is not trouble code - the scree will display "DONE."

Try that. If you don't get any codes, you might need to head to the dealer to have them hook up to the DRB

You mean it constantly flashes on and off? That means there is serious trouble...

True, but that light could be anything.

I am not sure when Chrysler pulled the "self check" trouble codes though, so it might mean a trip to the dealer if you can't read the codes yourself.

When it comes on and stays on: little trouble like O2 sensor.

When it goes on and off and on and off: bigger trouble, like engine running on 5 cylinders due to faulty injector or ignition coil / failing spark plug.

Anyway, that is what goes for all cars over here.

The CEL needs to go away first - but several folks have said SeaFoam will clear the carbon buildup.

Stop driving it ASAP and get it properly diagnosed, you may bend over for it but it's better then blowing the engine. The crushed Y-pipe you drove around with for some time could have caused your problems now.

Good luck finding an exhaust shop that is willing to chance the federal fine for removing smog equipment.

flashing CEL=cats are in imminent danger. typically the engine is not firing properly, raw fuel is being deposited into said converters, and when they do finally get to heat up, their innards feel like my colon after two Chipotle burritos.

And if you remove the cats, get ready for a permanent CEL.
