Do you guys get a loud whirring from the transmission? I hear the transmission very loudly, gear whine is pretty noticable. Been like this since I bought it with 50k miles. Is this normal?

What's up with all these "whirring" questions?
Another guy has "whirring" with his auto.
Well anyway I owned an '07 manual for 2500 miles, and I had every annoyance in the world, but not a loud whirring.
Not sure what gear whine is, but I don't think I had that either.

You can't actively hear the transmission? I can....just seems inappropriately loud, not like there is something wrong, just seems like there in NO sound insulation (i hope nothing is wrong, it is Friday the 13th)

might be due for a fluid change in the tranny and diffs. get some amsoil or other high quality oil, in there. however, you will hear the tranny more in a truck than in a car...

Well I traded mine in last week for an automatic because I had a lot of problems with it, so I can't go drive it around to confirm.
I heard driveline clunk whenever I let the clutch up or down. The engine is noisier with the manual than the auto. Especially 1st gear. Sounds like a beast in 1st gear. Very Manly !!!!

What do you mean "hear" the transmission? What does the transmission sound like when you hear it? And when exactly does it make these sound?

I've got an '03 with 52,000+ miles and the 5-speed. I haven't noticed any unusual noises coming from the tranny. Maybe you need to get a louder exhaust  But seriously, with a manual transmission if you sit idling and let the clutch in and out while in neutral, you will hear a "whirring" of sorts when you let the clutch out all the way. This is perfectly normal though. It's simply the clutch engaging with the engine. Any manual transmission vehicle will do this and there is no cause for alarm. As you put more miles on it may become a bit more pronounced, but it's simply due to standard (no pun intended) wear and tear.

Ive had trucks and other SUV's without hearing such. Lets see how to describe. It really sounds like a normal transmission, except imagine listening to it under the car with your ear 6 inches from it. Its that loud. I really like it...it does sound manly and mechanical, I just hope there isnt something wrong because Ive never heard gear whine or the actual mechanicals that loudly in the cabin before.

IMHO that's normal. When they started putting the NV3550 in TJs there were posts literally every day with somebody asking "what the heck is that noise in my 5 speed?" It's definitely noticeable in my TJ, but when I drove a friend's 02 KJ with the same tranny it was 10x louder and more noticeable. It's the younger brother of the NV4500-series truck transmission, and just isn't very refined. The loudest is when you're idling at a stoplight with the tranny in neutral and the clutch let out.

Changing the fluid helps for about 10-20k miles, but it comes right back.

The only thought that I have is if you are resting your foot above the clutch while driving. If I am getting ready to potentially shift I will hear a noise that I would imagine is the throwout bearing on the pressure plate.

I'm sure that not having a dead-pedal helps create the potential for that.

A fluid change with a high quality synthetic will probably work wonders for noise as well as longevity. Maybe even pick up a couple mpg's if you go synthetic in both diff's, transfer case and tranny.

The only time I notice whirring sounds is when I am wheeling in 4-low, 1st gear. and hitting about 2-3k

is your obd II light on?

my '03 renegade makes the very same noises. 1st gear being the loudest by far. Also very noisy when it's out of gear and foot is off the clutch pedal. A bit of driveline clunk as well. I was told very early on that this was normal. The manuals are apparently very heavy duty trans and are known for makin lots of noise. I also understand that they require a little more driveline slack than the autos, but I do not know if that is true.

The coolest sound is gearing down to first gear while turning into the driveway.... she just sings!

Yeah, I miss driving thru the parking lot of my apartment complex with 1st gear growling like a beast. When I traded in for an auto the first drive I took to break it in I stopped at the gas station and bought a Frappucino. I've don't think I've ever done that before. The auto has changed me.

Yeah, I think it is just heavy duty. I don't hear any reduction in sound, and I have done the tranny, transfer case, and both diffs with full synthetic....

x2..All my fluids are syn also. No reduction in noise. I don't mind it, but my father commented on it one time.

Mine seems to run quiet and fine. It sounds like the gears are working quietly and efficiently-but I have the 6 speed(sometimes I still forget to put her down into 6th on the freeway). I don't notice any esp issues(doesn't bother me), mileage is o.k.(especially considering the weight of the vehicle, it is super fun to drive and handled a fairly rough Colorado winter with the greatest of ease. No worries here, but I do only have about 7k on the odo. And as far as the noise goes for you, if it aint broke don't fix it(unless you're talking lbj's).

6 speed is a different animal than the 5's in earlier models.
