Post subject:  "Rolling screw" rattle? Found it.

So I'm posting this in the event someone else had this happen to them.

On both my 98 TJ and now my 07 KJ, I've had a rattle that can best be described as something rolling across the floorboard when I took sharp corners. Found it tonight, and it's the same in both cases.

There was a bolt rolling around under the carpet on the driver's side. On the TJ, it was inside the cavity where the front of the seat brackets bolted onto. In that case, I couldn't get it out, so I ended up shooting underbody spray in there. Once it dried, bolt was held in place. On the KJ, the bolt was just behind it, rolling between it and the carpet (there's just enough space to do it).

Hope this saves someone some frustration!

FO. That is what we call it in the aerospace industry. Foreign Objects. I was amazed how many rivets, washers, and other fasteners I found under the carpet of my KJ, my father-in-laws JK and my XJ. They really need to clean up the assembly process before one of these pieces of FO causes a real problem on a vehicle.

Good tip on getting it quiet,I'll have to remember that trick.I think the best one I can remember is a Ford pickup a guy brought to our shop with a noise like a ball rolling inside of his heater box.The truck was fuel injected. When I finally found the noise(after driving it for 5 hours)it led me to the inertcia switch. When I removed it and cut it apart I found not one,but two steel balls inside.Who would have ever thunk it?

I don't know if it's true, but someone told me a story (around 10 years ago) about an older lady who bought a brand new Cadillac with this sort of problem. To make a long story short, she heard a "rattling" of sorts in the car. After MANY trips back to the dealer, and allegedly after having the ENTIRE front end of the car replaced, GM bought it back from her. They apparently tore the car apart piece by piece and cataloged every single part to find out what didn't belong where. Upon removing the passenger side interior door panel, a Coke can came rolling out with what appeared to be initials on them written in permanent marker. After a lengthy investigation, apparently a former assembly line employee left his calling card while on his last day of work. Haha, I don't know if it's true, but it is funny. I'd be P/O'd if I were this woman. The guy who told me this story was also the one who told me to refuse to buy any car that was manufactured on a Monday or a Friday. Believe it or not, upon delivery of my Liberty, I checked the date of manufacture on a calendar prior to agreeing to purchase it. So far I haven't had a single problem with my KJ - KNOCK ON WOOD. In fact my Renegade wasn't affected by any of the recalls until the second round of LBJ recalls! The technician even told me that my factory LBJs were so solid that he would not recommend performing the service if it weren't mandated by law because it would be a waste of time and money for both of us. I love my Jeep!

I once heard a similar story, in 1990 someone brought in a new corvette with an issue with a noise under left turns, after some searching the dash was pulled, inside a UAW pencil tied to string so as to make noise was found. Records were pulled for the person who assemblied the dash on that time and day of production and the employee was "dismissed".

And then there were two...

So last night, I pulled the bolt out and called it done. Didn't bother to drive it, since I figured that would be that. Got in this morning, made a sharp right turn, ssssssss-ping!

Another bolt. Exact same type.

It's actually almost comical. :)
