I’ve noticed that a lot of the topics start with “I did a search but was unable to find it” or similar. I give the search engine a chance once in a while but really I gave up. I know you can do one with Google but I can’t remember. How about someone who knows how to do it places this info here for future reference? |

I could make it pop up the google search in another window so you could keep your current one open, or not. Of course google is not real time-- it will only index once every so many days and it will not work for private forum topics, like moderator rooms and what not. But at least you could find what you need quicker. Perhaps I could fix the regular search too. Let me know if interested... Darby or whoever. |

Pablo brings up a good point....google does not have the newest stuff. It is great for finding older topics, but for the newest threads the on site search actually does better. |

I think the major problem with the search is that by default it does a "Search for any terms or use query as entered" and not "Search for all terms" Basically, if you search for "spare tire carrier", it's going to find postings with spare tire carriers....but it's also going to find every post with the word "tire" in it, which is pretty much everything. Another example - I just searched for "part time light" to see if there are any results for the common problem where the part time light shows up when in 2wd and off in 4wd. Nothing useful on the first page. When I search for "all terms", the answer is in the 15th thread listed. Another gripe I have about the search is that it doesn't send you directly to the post containing the words you searched for - it sends you to the entire thread, which could potentially involve reading a 20 page thread only to find that the last person used the words you are looking for as part of their sig. |
