Post subject:  What Gas

I drive about 500 miles a week at work. One week I used Q trip and averaged 15.5 mpg in city and hwy. One week I used shell got 14 mpg
went with Chevron and get 17 mpg and the second week got 16.5 per gallon .wife's LJ gets 18.5 on the hwy with Chevron .Has anyone tried different gas companies Chevron is 2 cents more here.
Glad my company pays mileage.

Great question, I've often wondered the same thing. It seem like, to me at least, the no-name gas gets me better mileage. but at what cost to the engine?

Do all those additives and super boosters or whatever they claim to have in their gas really make a difference??

I use BP 87 octane mostly (sometimes Amoco) and get 16.5 in town and 20 hwy.

Has any had a fuel system flush with the stuff that's supposed to remove carbon deposits from your valves? My dealer recommended their fuel system cleaner (I forget the brand -- never heard of it before) since I'm at 50K miles now. I'll be due for a new battery this fall was going to try the cleaner around that time before winter hits. Does the decarbonizing treatment really improve gas mileage? Supposedly it give you smoother idle too. I have noticed a rougher/even idle in the last 10 mos. or so and would appreciate a treatment that can settle it down.

B20 (with ULSD base and poultry bio) and I get about 24 in mixed hwy/city.
(sorry, I just couldn't help myself).

Seriously, though, my wife's Audi really likes BP/Amaco, and it can be a finicky little turbo. They're usually price-competitive as well. It seems like regardless of brand, the places that keep things clean are the ones that give the best results. Less contamination==less problems is a factor common to all types of fuel. I used QT for years in my acura and got great milage, but it was also an impeccably-run location that saw a LOT or fuel turnover.

I usually use EXXON or BP gas. Mostly BP 87octane. I average around 18-20mpg..

Video Guy, a product called SeaFoam is a great product to use. You can pour it in the gas tank, suck it through a vacuum hose, or pour it into the oil. I dont like putting crap like that in my oil though. Putting it in the gas tank and sucking it through a vacuum hose seems to work best.

Sea Foam works quite well. My old IH Scout engine had all kinds of gunk all over the rockers and every other surface under the valve covers. I waited until I had about a 1/4 tank of fuel left and poured 1/2 a bottle of Sea Foam in the gas and put the other 1/2 in with the engine oil. Then I drove it about 50 miles before doing an oil change. It cleaned all that gunk out and the truck ran noticeably better after that.

It also worked wonders to remove road tar from a set of satin finish aluminum wheels.

The same company makes a product called Deep Creep that also works well. I keep both on hand in my shop.

As for fuel, My wife had a Malibu that statred running poorly. The dealer's first question was, "Where do you get your gas?" We were using fuel from AM/PM because it was cheaper. The dealer cleaned the injectors and advised sticking with Chevron, Union 76, Shell or Texaco. We chose Chevron and never had another problem after that.

With the KJ I have tried gas from the local Stop & Rob on occasion but notice that I do get about 1/2 to 1 mpg better MPG when I use Chevron (regular).

I used to smoke cigars with the fellow who bought gas for QT. They really do have great gas. They also make good on their guarantee, an old friend of mine got his carb rebuild paid for by QT several years ago. When they upgraded fuel additives a few years ago money was set aside to cover for problems arising from tank suldge being knocked loose by the extra cleaners added.
