Post subject:  Rattle from Top of Dash

This isn't a big deal, but just in case someone has an easy fix I thought I'd ask.

When I'm driving on a paved road or highway that has a somewhat rough surface I get this "tinny" vibration noise from the long vent at the top of the dash that runs along the windshield. Tonight I made sure that's where the noise is coming from because I can make it sound all "tinnny" by tapping around it with my finger. I think if someone held their hand there the whole trip it would probably stop, but I don't think the ladyfriend would do that for me.

Anyway it's not a big deal, and you can't hear it over the radio, but if anyone has a fix let me know.

That piece of trim is creaking a bit on mine, so I'll pop it off this weekend and take a look. Looks like it just pops off.

Same here!! i hate that annoying little noise. Doesn't seem so bad in warm weather. It must expand just enough to stop it at times.

Yep. Warm weather, silent.

Reminds me of the creaky dash in my 01 XJ. What genius decided snapping plastic panels onto a flexible plastic frame was a good idea? :x

While searching for another rattle in the dash tonight (ended up being the uConnect speaker module, which the dealer didn't tighten down), I noticed that the holes where the metal clips from the knee trim planel slip into had a thin felt decal on them to keep noise down. I think I know what to do. Looks like it's time for a run to Home Depot...

same thing, and have discussed many times with other fellow KJers, they got that, too. Might be a certain year, mine is 04.
Cold weather-- RATTLE, Warm Weather --NON

I punched that place so many times, it's not even funny anymore. I got used to it, but I could never find where it was coming from. And it is always on weird spots on highway.. It doesn't rattle on huge potholes, but will rattle on tiny imperfections on the road... grrrrr

When I was a teenager, my dad let me take the family Suburban from Powell, Wyo all the way to Laramie, Wyo to go watch state basketball tourney. Me and my buddies headed south...after about 4 hours on the road I noticed a tinny sound that would get faster as the speed when up (we were in Casper Wyo). It was stop and go traffic for awhile. I was freaking out thinking I'd done something. No. It was my smart stupid friend popping the tab of a pop can in sync with the speed!!

Seriously though. My KJ does creak alot in colder weather. Must because we all are trying to be 'Trail Rated' and not 'Mall Rated'. Too much off road... :P

Did you figure out the fix to this minor annoyance?

not to keep off topic, but i like to hang my arm out the window when someone is backing up, then hit the door panel with a solid thump....hehehehe, makes them think they backed into something

Since the topic is falling apart anyway I have to share what my uncle does when fishing.
Imagine sitting in a boat with your pole over the side, nothing biting, just sitting there daydreaming.
All of a sudden when you're not looking my uncle will grab your fishing line and just yank down on it until your pole bends over double.
You want to see some people get excited and jump back into reality, give that a try.
Make sure you're bigger than the person you do it to though, or you'll end up overboard.

Class! Pay attention class! Focus!

So when I had my XJ, which was notorious for having a creaky POS dash, I bought some thin felt self-stick pads at the local Walgreens and put them on the surfaces where the metal clip on the trim panels contacts the frame (inside the slots). The trick is that the felt pads can't be too thick, otherwise the clip won't be able to go in correctly, and the panel needs to move around a little bit as the dash flexes. We just want to stop the metal on plastic creak.

I'm going to see if I can hit the local Walgreens or Home Depot today. Got some errands to run anyway. The "felt blanket" and felt discs that HD has sold in the past is too thick. Don't know how I came across the ones at Walgreens, but they're perfect - nice and thin. If I could find that thickness in blanket or tape form, I'd be set.

This afternoon, I started to pop the trim off the top of the dash before heading out to run some errands. I popped the first couple of clips on the driver's side, then stopped. More work than I wanted to do before I left, so I popped it back down.

No more rattle. Seriously. If you haven't popped it up and back down (at least a little - I didn't take it all the way off), give it a try and see what happens.

I hear it was pain to get that dash piece out because it felt like it will break into pieces..

I do the same thing!! Another thing I do is when I am guiding someone out of a tight spot, or letting them into a small parking spot, i would continue saying "come..come.. come.. comee... " and then BANG! I would hit their bumper... then yell "HAAAALLLLTTTTTT"... heheheheh..

Or sometimes if I am in the car with them, i would bang on the interior and yell "THE CATTTTT".

if someone pulled the same thing on me, i would throw them off the car.

Well it was tough to get partially lifted, that's for sure. I didn't want to try to figure it out just then (probably no big deal), so that's why I stopped. It doesn't appear to be creaking now, so I'm not going to mess with it at this point. 'Course, weather's been warmer, so this may get resurrected in the fall...
