| Post subject: | Muffler Question |
I know quite a few on here have upgraded their mufflers to aftermarket one. In addition to the fact that it just plain sounds better, what kind of improvements in fuel economy have you all noticed? I am going to be having an 75 mile round trip to my classes and really like my Jeep, so I am trying to do everything in my power to help fuel economy. I know.....basic fact when we got it, but I'm just doing what I can. I'm thinking of doing the muffler, a high flow air filter, and then just taking it easy on the go pedal lol. And what types are good? I've heard Flowmaster or Magnaflow have a throaty sound (dont want it to sound like a Honda). |

The best thing you can do is use cruise, and avoid quick throttle responces. I dought the other things will ever pay for themselves in fuel savings. |

No real savings since I added my Magnaflow. About the same. Sound is awesome. Nice rumble that isn't obnoxious. My muffler guy said that Flowmasters tend to be really loud in SUV's and said the Magnaflow would be right for me. Same price for me either way. I am glad I went that route. |

i love my flowmaster super 40. I got about a 1 mpg increase when i combo'd it with a new intake, Im very happy with it. It isnt very loud to me... at idle its actually quiet, just alot deeper. the only point it tends to resonate in the cab is about 2000-2200 PRMs but only when accelerating, not when cruising. The super 40 was Flowmasters answer to same performance of the standard, but with less interior resonance. |

Did you guys just replace the can or go with entire cat-back? My customer in chicago has a ram with a magnafglow setup on his hemi and it sounds sweet. I would love to get that throaty growl out of my libby, no use in having all that displacement without the sound.... (coming from a guy who's biggest engine prior to this was 1797cc's (1.8l)) What is the $$$$ for this too? -Mark |

I got a Gibson catback for under $300. If you live in a wet climate I would get the upgraded stainless version still cheaper than the other catback systems. Sounds great, not to loud, has a low rumble and can barely hear it in the cab...I have no input on gas milage as I don't have an EVIC and I changed tire sizes. |

I've been comparing the Gibsons, Flowmasters, and Magnaflows. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the aftermarket exhaust systems are the same size piping as factory right? And 1 mpg possibly would be worth it to me, as my Jeep is going to be racking up miles like crazy (I feel sorry for it) and the sound would be cool because I think I'll be in a parking garage and get to play with it |

aeroturbine mufflers are expensive, but they are the only ones that have consistently been reported showing very significant mpg gains. their sound is unbelievable too, and apparently you can have it as loud or quiet as you want. all the others are mainly just for personal sound choice. diesels have apparently shown huge improvements and even gas engines have had real improvements. the problem is when people use chambered mufflers that are designed to have the sound waves cancel each other out, is that they put an H pipe before them. the sound pulses need to be as strong as possible for it to have the right effect, if you use an H pipe, put it after the mufflers. if its a single exhaust, then the pipes feeding from both sides need to have the same length tubing, otherwise the pulses will be out of time. thats why on a liberty, the flowmasters and edelbrock type don't work as efficiently or sound quite as smooth as they do on other types of V motors. being a muffler guys friend is always a good idea. ive had tons of custom systems made exactly the way i wanted. i believe the cat back ones are an 1/8 bigger inside diameter, but its a waste of money on a less than highly modified liberty. just getting rid of the stock muffler and pinch in the pipe next to it frees up most of the restriction go for the aeroturbine, i just havent saved up enough for mine yet. |
