Quote: Auburn is great on road as you'd never know it was there. So if you plan on using it in snowy/icy road conditions and want something that's invisible this is your diff. Now the not so good...it takes more wheel spin to engage than the TT. It uses clutches and it will wear out over time. After 40,000 miles the perfomance was starting to deteriorate (comparable to the TracLoc lifespan)
I just read this in the 4x4 section. This being said, could the loss of gas mileage I have been experiencing be due to my Trac-Lok failing/binding up etc.? My loss in mpg was an overnight drop and I have been suspicious of my rear axle, but I really don't know why - just some sort of hunch that hit me a while ago. Can the Trac-Lok be removed by any Joe-shmo or is it a technical process? Thanks very much for any suggestions /answers! |

Dont know the acutual lifespan but i find it hard to believe that is causing your loss in mpg. If it were binding or dragging that bad i'm sure it would be making some serious noise. You can't just remove it. You'd have to replace it with something. Backlash and carrier bearing preload has to be reset if you remove it. If youre not familiar with that, then i wouldn't recommend messing with it. In case you didn't know you can have it rebuilt. |

That's what I figured. I know absolutely nothing about differentials, so that's why I threw the question out there. Is it possible that it's constantly engaged? I'm guessing that would put a damper on mileage. Again, I don't know if this is possible, but I'm just drawing at straws here. Thanks again! |

All your questions can be answered by you find some rock or dirt road and have some one drive your jeep in a U turn and look to see if the outter tire is draging I know the answer will be no as the cluches wear it has more of an open affect on things not more of a locked that to me would be a good thing if it locked more as it wore ,cause by now I would have a full locker |

If something is dragging in the rear, it could most likely be your calipers sticking and creating a drag. |

Thought about the calipers as well. When I changed my brake pads I gave everything a good looking at and bled the brakes, so everything is OK there. Thanks for all the suggestions. This might just be some deeper seated problem that I'll have to deal with later when I get some money to have it looked at. |

If the limited slip was locking up, your tires would squeal when you pulled out while making a turn. |

My guess, e-brake stuck, just feel if your centre hubs are getting warm/hot after a few Miles. |

Interesting update - After jcphoto20 suggested I do the Seafoam "engine scrub", my mileage went up to 19mpg with no change in my driving habits! I was able to get almost 300 miles out my last tank of gas. Prior to that, the best I could do was 260 miles - that's 2 MPG P.S. Dutchy - thanks for the suggestion, but my e-brake is backed all the way off right now because the liners fell right off the shoes when I changed my rotors. They were completely shot! |
