OK - I am not sure if this could become a serious problem ... or if it was just a scary kind of a short circuit or sth else.

I was on a 550 miles road trip on Friday when after about 40 miles my ABS and Breaks warning lights came on ... I was just doing 75mph on the interstate .... and suddenly the speedometer dropped from 75mph to 20mph ... went up to about 40mph and dropped again slowly.

I stopped the car ... made some break tests (everything OK) and decided to continue driving to the next exit .... when the lights went off and everything worked fine - if nothing ever happened.

I stopped at a service area and checked my ball joints (got the replacement 2 months ago) checked if I loose any fluids (negative) and decided to continue the road trip.

Since then I drove about 600 miles and did some light off-roading with no problems!

Any ideas? Would you let someone check the car or just wait what happens next?

sounds like the speed sensor going out, or the wire to it may be damaged. Its located in the rear differential I believe. Someone else would have to give you the details on that.

you can check for any error codes that maybe still on the computer.
There is a section for it on here some place to show you how it is done.(maybe some one remembers where it is)
I think it is ( key in ignition) On-off-On. Don't turn the key untill the engin starts. stop one click before it. then your speedo will show an error code. This is a really cheap way to check your computer.

I agree with Jeger. My '99 Ram did this exact same thing when the speed sensor went. The speedo would flop around and the ABS light stayed on, in fact I was lucky if my speedometer worked at all. The speed sensor was located on the rear axle on the Dodge (it was near the passenger rear, the drive wheel), but not sure on the Jeep. It may be in the rear diff. If you can find it, it's an easy fix. I had it done at my dealer and it cost me $40 - so it should cost you 1/4 that if you DIY.

Thanks guys - I will check the error code...

As for a dying speed sensor: Does it take that long to finally finish working properly?
I am asking because except for the 10 seconds it went up and down like crazy - it worked fine now for 600 miles and 5 days.
