| Post subject: | FLAT TOWING QUESTION. |
Not sure where this question should go. I would like to know what I need to Flat Tow my YJ with my KJ. My KJ has the towing package and is rated for 5000 lbs. I have already towed the YJ on a trailer/ but thought if I could skip the trailer I might save some weight and it would tow easier. |

Hmmm, looking at your sig, you YJ is lifted quite a bit and has 35's on it. I would not flat tow it with your KJ because the heght of the centerline of the tow bar will be much higher than your hitch and the tow bar would not like it. I have experience with this and my FJ40 with 6" of lift and 35's. Your YJ is probalby leaf springs so you have to make sure you get your alignment to factory specs including castor and camber or it will not flat tow at all...been there. I found it impossible to flat tow my FJ40 because of those reasons. I had to once, I rode in the 40, and my wife towed it with a tow bar in the KJ for about 5 miles. At one point, the 40 decided to lift the KJ's rear wheels off the ground on a slow, banked corner. |

I've towed both my Liberty and Wrangler many thousands of miles. In fact, I'm here in Moab having towed the Lib from California about 700 miles. Always towed with much heavier vehicles - motor home or 1T pickup - so no "tail wagging dog" stuff. Anyway, in case you don't know, put the transfer case in neutral and the trans im Park (important). Ideally, your tow bar should be level when hitched, but I've also towed with some major diferences, no problem. In fact, when making an abrupt stop the rear of the tow vehicle raises, so the towed vehicle would tend to increase the de-weighting of the rear of the tow vehicle if the bar was level. Maybe a little down tilt is better, but experts recommend level. You can get hitches that provide various ball heights, some are adjustable. Hope this helps. |
