Post subject:  Oil Filter/Transmission Pan - Magnets

There have probably been threads on this, but I could only find 1 short one from a couple years ago.
I was reading this morning about FilterMag which makes a magnetic wrap for oil filters and a flat magnet to stick on the tranny pan. They are supposed to catch very small metal shavings that are too small to be caught by the filters.

What do you think about this? Any experience using these dudes?

the transmission pan has one in it from the factory, and it works. don't know about the oil pan though. it would be a lot of work to get it in there.

I didn't know the tranny pan already had one. Good to know.
The oil magnet I was looking at just wraps around the oil filter. Good for the life of the vehicle.
Saw them at FilterMag.com.

Since the first time I did an oil change on the Lib back in '03, I've had a magnet stuck on the bottom of the pan. Every time I do an oil change I drag it towards the drain after removing the plug to remove any metal shavings, however, to date there haven't been any. I wouldn't spend the money on one of these magnets that goes around the filter. Any particle that is too small for the filter to catch is traveling at too high a velocity to be slowed down by the magnet, let alone captured by it. This is just another gimmick that is designed to scare the consumer into believeing that if you don't have it, your engine will die a premature death.

Fairly sure that the filter will catch almost anything that goes through it.

They say that it is snake oil, but what the heck, I bought one on ebay and slapped it on my oil filter. These magnets are SUPER strong, and you cannot pry them apart if they stick together. I don't think it helps much, but as I said, what the heck... :P

you could always buy a super magnet (pricey) and stick it on the end of the drain plug if it gets knocked off you probly lost your drainplug as well

You could always buy a cheap magentizer and next time you change your oil, run it across the drain plug several times. Then you'd have a magnetized drain plug and you could see if here were any shavings or particles stuck to it every time you change the oil.

If an external magnet falls off, all of the collected particles will be simultaneously circulated through the system. It's probably better to let the filter catch them and drain them out with the old oil. If the particles are too small for the filter, they're probably not doing much harm to the equipment.

My magnet is pretty darn powerful. It's managed to stay on there for over 66,000 miles without moving. Of course, I don't do any off-roading either.
