I've had experience w/a large mig welder that uses shielding gas, but have never seen one of these. Has anyone had any experience with a portable welder that runs off batteries?

Just carry a couple of rods and a pair of jumper cables, works just as good.

I played with one at the local 4x4 expo one year and was surprised at how well and easy it welded. It was hooked to a deep cycle battery and it worked as well as my Lincoln Mig if not better. I am sure it was dialed in perfectly for the material they had there to try though so that might be why it was impressive. IIRC, I tried it on 3/16" material.

We have several folks in my club with them and they are great. Most of us are using flux core without any shielding gas for trail repairs. With 2 batteries in series they will weld anything on your truck with ease. One person even uses it as his home welder with shielding gas. Takes a little practice getting use to the wire feed control but the unit is balanced well and easy to manuever.

We use to use the rods and jumper cable method but these put that method to shame. We have used them for welding driveshafts back together to reattaching control arm brackets.
