Post subject:  Grad Present (winch) for my Brother...need insight!

Ok, so my little brother is graduating from high school this april and we are thinking about a graduation present for my brother (it will be from the family). He has a 2oo1 Jeep Cherokee with 2.5 inch lift, with steelies, mudders, stock armor and just recently a NEW front bumper that ironically has a nice little spot waiting to be filled with a winch....it just doesn't look right with out one and with the way he wheels it would be functional as well...so my question to those with winches is...what is a good size winch for his vehicle and what kind of accessories do you find the most useful?

Warn8000's are nice,or you can try any Tabor winches(made by Warn) for a more resonable price but good performance and support.

The winch should be rated to pull 150% of the vehicle weight. The Cherokee XJ has a curb weight of 3057 lb and should be minimally equipped with a 4500 lb winch. A Warn M6000 should work well, but I personally run an M8000 on my Liberty. Remember, the pull rating is determined when only one wrap of cable is on the spool. Just be sure the winch is physically compatible with the front bumper.

A recovery kit is essential for safety and functionality. The Warn Medium-Duty Winching Accessory Kit is a good choice.

ok thanks for the info...keep it coming guys...it has a standard 4 bolt pattern for mounting the winch in the recess of the bumper and then two holes pre-drilled for the rollers on the front of the bumper...ill work out the exact dimensions later when it doesnt look too obvious but its something like 10x5 and the roller bolt width is 10 in.

Sounds like a warn winch would fit perfect! I would go with a M8000 warn as well. I have one but haven't yet installed it, it seems like one of the most common. Also try the tabor brade made by warn. The only difference between it and the warn is the warranty, leaver to control clutch.

If he doesn't mind used, this one looks to be in pretty good shape, it is local (CO), and $500 OBO.

I can vouch for the WARN M8000. Love the one I have mounted up to our Rubicon.

I know a lot of people with the Warn 8000 lb winches, they do the job nicely. I'd bet a lot of money that if you have a commercially available winch plate, that any Warn 8k winch will fit fine.
