Under the battery there are 2 bolts connected to the frame I think. On one of the bolts there is a hose that is just looped on top. It's not screwed on or tight or anything, just a loop that kind of sits on the bolt real loose. It won't just pull off though, so something is holding it on there. The hose runs down towards the oil filter (actually touches the oil filter) then it disappears to where I can't see towards the skid plate. I was wondering what it is and what it does, and if should be sitting on top of that bolt all loose and wobbly. Anybody know? Sorry.....no pictures. It was getting late & dark. |

Breather tube from your diff? How big is the hose? On my a little tube goes from the front diff up to a round cone shaped thing bolted on the fender behind/under the battery. (If I remember right). |

After looking on the internet I think it is a breather hose. I found out what a differential is, but having trouble finding out what this hose does. It's called a "breather" hose, so is it's only purpose to let air in to the differential (if so, why?) I think there was a little knob on it also. Can someone explain how this hose works and what it's purpose is. |

diff breathers are to let the pressure equalize bewteen the atmosphere and inside the differential. with a pressure difference, you could possibly suck moisture (water) in, or spew fluid out. the thing on the end is there to limit, large amounts of containments into the tube. |

So I found a little info on the internet. Hopefully I have this right. The differential has to breathe. The breather could be right on the differential, but this could suck when going through water. So.......a hose it attached to the breather and routed to the firewall near my battery. That way the diff can still breathe, but the opening is way up near the battery so you can go thru water without sucking it in. The little knob on top isn't something that you turn to open or close. It is just a little valve that responds to pressure. Turning it does nothing. Did I get it right? |
