How do you get into 4-Low if you're on an incline going uphill?

I was on a mild hill yesterday, but then saw it was about to get real steep, so I wanted to go to 4-Low.
Problem is you can't roll forward up a hill at 3 to 5mph like the manual says to do.
I tried doing it while stopped, tranny in neutral, but I could only get the lever to neutral and it wouldn't go into 4-Low.
Then I almost crapped myself because I couldn't get out of neutral and I was in the middle of nowhere.
Finally got back to 2-HI.

Gotta yank real hard, also walk ahead in a unkown area to judge if 4-lo is needed. When in doubt run in 4-lo anyways. Most trails here in CO we just go into 4-lo right away a keep it there until off the trail.

If you are facing uphill, just let it roll backwards..

You can also pull back on the lever if its stuck in N then put the tranny in D. It should pop right into low if you are holding back on the tcase lever.

Same here. I've always engaged 4lo while completely stopped and have never had a problem. Never had to force it, easily engaged with two fingers. Would the type of tranny or transfer case make a diff? I'm running 5 speed with PT tranfer case.

Mine shifts into 4-lo real easy, then again I use it alot.If you don't use 4-lo alot it can be a bear to shift into 4-lo until everything gets working again. My '84 F-150 transfer would not shift int 4-lo for nothing,I bought it in '95 with 119,000 miles and the guy I bought it from never engaged 4-lo much less 4-hi.Ended up soaking all the linkages with WD-40 and getting in and kicking the living s#@t out of the shifter till in went into 4-lo.

I suppose thats possible, but I mean sometimes I will go 6 months without putting it in 4lo(winter time) and still no problem.....

seems like this is the 3rd or so thread I have seen here where people were having problems.....

You did move the transfer case lever to the right before trying to pull it back into 4LO, correct?

Never thought about that. be sure to pull the lever to the right and back after you get to N. There is a pic on the lever that shows you what to do.

Ive used 4low tons of times and it still doesnt like to go into low sometime.

The 231 case may be different than the 242 when it comes to easy of shifting..

Try putting your tranny into N and coast at about 2mph.

When I first got my Libby, last year, I had a really hard time getting the t-case into N but, now it almost falls in. Stopped, rolling (forward or back)... it's definitely gotten worked loose. In fact, if I park it in 4-lo and there's little or no incline where I stop, it will even fall out of 4-lo into N. I use the e-brake now.

I'll bet the fact that the T-case is chain drive has to do with why there is a "break in" period before it gets easier to engage. I would imagine that the chain does stretch over time..... anyone ever had trouble with the chain getting too loose?
