I am getting a slight ticking on start up lately, I am thinking lifters maybe? I assume it's a push rod engine but I have never had it apart. if it is lifters do I need to remove the head? |

Just the lifters,it should go away after a few min.You should only hear it till the lifters get pumped up with oil, ussually lasts longer with heavier wieght oil and colder temps. The 3.7 is a single overhead cam engine, the cams are on top of the head, but still use lifters to open/close the valves. If the noise does not go away then you may have to thick of oil or a collapsed lifter. Also the injectors make a cliking sound while the engine is running and is normal.

I was getting some slight ticking on startup and during hard acceleration in higher rpm's. After I flushed the motor with some Seafoam it all went away. Try that. I've always heard that adding a small amount (maybe about 1/4 cup) of ATF+4 to your oil helps with lifters as well. |

Mine has purdy much always had the ticking noise. More so in the winter when its really cold. Usually does it until the engine is warm.. Just take it nice and easy until it gets to operating temp.. I use 10w-30 Mobil One Syn.. |

Yeah, I thought that no ticking was a bad sign... Ticking is a good thing on my Jeep - let's me know it's running |

yea just run some seafoam thru it once in a while about 500 miles before an oil change, change your filter and put about a half a can in your oil. will clean out a bunch of stuff in 500. |

Just a little warning...If it starts ticking under acceleration, it could be serious. The wrist pin developed "slack" in my old 2002 KJ. It allowed the piston to walk around a bit. I pulled the oil pan and slipped in a new rod/piston assmebly and it took care of the problem. I also had 3 cracked valve springs and serious goo on the valve train...short city trips. I would run Seafoam or similiar before every oil change under those conditions. |
