Me and my wife have been talking for a few weeks now about getting a bigger car because of our 5 month old boy. we need to have more room and the KJ was not cutting it. So we had to let my wife's 04 KJ go today. And we bothe hated it and did not want the &*#%$^& mini van. Yes, the KJ was replaced with a &^%$#@! mini van. We were looking into the commander but it still was not enough room. But mine is safe>>>>>>>>>>> |

At least the minivan is what it is and does not pretend to be something it is not. I wished more people would drive minivans, cars and station wagons instead of "Trailblazers" and CRV's. My Jeep is for weekends, trips, camping and offroading. If I move closer into town and get rid of the commute it can be a daily driver, but the right tool for the right job is never a bad thing. With the sliding doors on a minivan, you don't have to worry about the kids door dinging cars when they get out. If it gets too much, sell the KJ and get a TJ/JK Rubicon. |

Actually my wife drives a C-RV and loves it. I never thought I would see a foreign car in my driveway, but we couldn't pass up the deal since weren't doing to well financially at the time. Even now, she wouldn't trade it in for anything and I feel very safe with her driving it, especially in the winter time with the automatic 4WD. I actualy tried to get it to break loose (within moderation of course) and couldn't do it. She calls it her "Dog Taxi" since she is a trainer, behavioral specialist and pet sitter. It suits her needs to a T. If Mama's happy, everybodies happy |

Lots of parents are toting their kids in JK Unlimiteds. Fortunately for me, my son is 12. |

You only have one child? If so, how can the KJ be too small? There are people on here with three children and they feel that it is roomy enough. |

My wife said "I will never get rid of my KJ" "We may get a tow rig for your TJ that is bigger but the KJ stays it is big enough for me and I dont see where having a kid and its stuff will be bad" |

I took my 8 year old son, my 62 year old father and 57 year old father-in-law and my self to Atlanta which is a 6 hour drive. With my fathers wheel chair and over night gear no problems. With one child I would have had more than enough room for trips. I now have 2 kids and plenty of baseball equipment ( 8 year old) and still have good room. |

Nice thing about minivans is the fact that you can get to the back without having to crawl over a seat or console. They are the way to go for some instances. More room and easier to get around in. I think you did better going that route than the Commander...better gas mileage and functionality. OK, I am going to say it...WE NEED PICS? (might be the first minivan pics on L.O.S.T. You could get a decals that says "My other "car" is a JEEP!" |

I also do not understand the whole "My kj isnt big enough." I grew up in a small chevy Eurosport then we traded that in 94 for a 94 grand. My brother was 10 and I was 8 when we got the grand. We took many vacations in both the EuroSport and the grand with zero complainants. Ill never have a minivan. I would let my wife(when she comes along) drive one if she paid for it. Sorry that you let the kj go.. Sad story indeed. |

When i was a kid my dad bought a new 84' cherokee when they first came out. It had enough room for my mom, dad, me, my brother and sister. |

I grew up in a 1973 4-door Ford Maverick with my parents and 1 yr older sister. When we were little (2-3 yrs old), we had a 2-door Maverick and was a 1-car family. I think society in America has gotten to the point of excess necessity. |

I think society in America has gotten to the point of excess necessity. I agree. Everyone thinks they need big SUV's or vans.. Guess we shouldnt take his thread over. . Back to the subject of needing vans for kids. |

One of the many reasons I bought the KJ was b/c I didn't want a mini-van. I've taken 3400 km road trips where the Lib was packed with 3 adults, a toddler in a car seat, 2 dogs in travel kennels and enough gear for twice the number of ppl/dogs. As the driver, I'm always comfortable |

My girlfriend recently sold her gas-guzzling V8 Dakota 4x4, and bought a 2007 Caravan "Canadian Edition" (absolutely no frills except air and a CD player) and that is a great little van. 7 seats, V6 auto, lots of power but way cheaper on gas. She paid $15,300 CDN for it (new). So far, so good! |

You gotta do what you gotta do, but I can't see one child and his/her baby gear taking up so much space that you need to upgrade to a larger vehicle. I'd recommend packing lighter, if possible, but it seems too late for that now. Sorry you let go of your Liberty so soon. I'll be buying a Honda Odyssey later this year, but only because we're expecting our third child this fall. After checking out various 3rd-row SUVs and "crossover" vehicles, a van is the only way to go comfortably and still have room behind the third row for more than one small suitcase. Minivans give you a lot of vehicle and safety features for the money! When we test drove the $31K Mazda CX-9, we couldn't fit anything other than our double-stroller in the back, and even that was a challenge. Any suitcases, pack'n'play, etc. would need to be loaded into a rooftop carrier, and if you've used one of those, you know that they're inconvenient for everyday use and will decrease your gas mileage on the highway to to wind resistance. I transported my wife, 4-year-old, and 16-month-old down to TN in our KJ and had plenty of interior room. Our rooftop carrier held a stroller, booster seat, and various lightweight items like sleeping bag and pillows, leaving the Liberty's cargo area for our heavier items like suitcases. The RoofBag soft cargo bag held up well even in a few thunderstorms and is nearly waterproof (technically it's "water resistant"). It's really well made for only $50. Don't even bother with the $30 carriers at Wal Mart. They'll rip to shreads after 500 miles. Luckily, I'm keeping our KJ because it's paid off. My wife will trade in her Mazda6, which is only 1 year old. |
