I generally agree that you shouldnt let teens drive around with a carfull of people.

But the perhaps bigger issue here:

Quote:
The driver, 19-year-old Cara M. Holland of Canton, and her front seat passenger, 21-year-old Roy D. Padgett of Woodstock, were wearing their seatbelts and survived.

None of the victims who died were wearing seatbelts.

Teach your kids to wear their seatbelts, and also to kick any passengers out that refuse to wear theirs.

another concern is where were 4 people sitting? Driver and front seat passenger are fine. But the back only has accommodations for 3 and I can;t see how you could possible fit more than that in the back seat. which means people were either in the cargo area or on laps, both of which result in a Darwin award and nothing else.

The liberty is pretty good in vehicle crashes so this is just another great example of why a seat belt is so important.

That really is a sad story. They said that alcohol was not a factor so they must of been out just having a good time when the accident happened. Probably just a mistake of the driver.. If it was a 2006 liberty it probably wouldnt of happened.. Hard to tell since we dont know the situation though..

Also, this shows you just how safe the liberty really is. The front of the jeep is usually where is caves in during a rollover but both of the front passengers were ok since they were wearing their seatbelts. And I agree about where the other passengers were sitting.. I personally have had people sit in my lap while someone was driving. I was a stupid teen at the time.. Around 16-17 is I recall correctly..

One thing I love about my moms 06 Grand(libertys have this also), is that it will chime untill you put your belt on(for both the passenger and driver, liberty is only driver). I know you can turn this off but I will not show her how to since she never wore her belt before.. now she must.. Hopefully she will get into the habit from now on.

Sad story. Always buckle up!
On another note, Phil just posted this video: http://jeepkj.com/forum/showthread.php?t=29838&page=6
Which is another incredible footage showing that you've GOT TO buckle up every single darn time, even if the place you are going is "just a block away"

Faster solution,go to a junk yard that has a KJ,cut the seatbelt latch out and then plug the latch in the seat belt(female end) of your KJ.Did this for my '01 Grand,I never wear my seatbelt in SD(I have my reasons, don't ask) and got sick of seeing that stupid red light on the dash.

I can vouch for seatbelts.

Back when I was young and dumb, I rolled my '72 Dodge on I76 going about 70 MPH. I was wearing the lap belt.
When I came to a stop I was still seated though upside down and I crawled out of the window completely unscathed.

Another tragic KJ story:

06/01/07

A 29 year old Shinglehouse woman died in a one-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon on the Clara Road, about a mile south of Route 44 in Clara Township. Coudersport-based state police said Kelly Sue Taylor, of the Clara Road was headed south when her Jeep Liberty went off the east side of the road, for about 330 feet through the yard at the home of James and Amberly Costello where it collided with a parked tractor. The impact caused the Jeep to overturn numerous times before coming to rest some 90 feet off the road. Taylor was ejected as the unit overturned. She was found about 124 feet east of the road and was pronounced dead at the scene. Taylor’s five year old son was also thrown out of the rolling Jeep but walked away from the scene. He and his 9 year old brother were taken to Charles Cole Hospital and the older boy was flown by helicopter to Geisinger Medical Center for treatment of major injuries.

Wow, how ironic. I posted the video while browsing the web. Now this article comes up. Like you said though, those are not dummies used in the crash...and the old style video suggests they didn't have amazing CGI back then. LOL. A stuntman/woman? That's crazy if it was.

I don't know what it was, maybe they used some sort of plastic windshield that got web pattern as soon as someone hit it lightly, and that guy did an amazing acting if he was.. I still cannot bring myself to believe that that was not real or, in fact, real.. :?

We had another video, that rollover video, with the drunk sleepy guy, that was also amazing. He had no seatbelt and he hit everything in that SUV..

I would still like to know the actual way to turn it off, I wear my seatbelt all the time when driving, but for those few times when I am not putting it on(backing the car out of the driveway and onto the street, pulling it forward when camping to level it out, or getting in and out when 4wheelin) I would rather not have to plug in a dummy thing just to stop that annoying beep.

Post subject:  Disabling Chime

This was posted at jk-forum.com. Might work for the KJ also.

NOTE: The following steps must occur within the first
60 seconds of the ignition switch being turned to the ON
or START position. The manufacturer does not recommend
deactivating the Enhanced Warning System
(BeltAlert).
1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position, and
buckle the driver or front passenger seat belt.
2. Turn the ignition key to the ACCESSORY/RUN position
(engine does not need to be running), and wait for
the Seat Belt Warning Light to turn off.
3. Within 60 seconds of starting the vehicle, unbuckle
and then re-buckle the driver or front passenger seat belt
at least three times within 10 seconds, ending with the
seat belt buckled.
4. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. A single
chime will sound to signify that you have successfully
completed the programming.
The Enhanced Warning System (BeltAlert) can be reactivated
by repeating this procedure.

for us older folk..... the seatbelt thing is not a matter of choice... i think any age past 25 its more of a habbit.. and my habbit is to put it on every time i get in the car... i dont need a stinkin chime to remind me that im not wearing it.

a dummy, wouldnt work for me... like i said i wear mine i just dont wear it when im hooking up my trailer, or takiung the trash to my dumpster in my apt.

has anyone tried the above test yet?

I'm not at home or I would post it but I know mine (06 sport) has the instructions in the Owner's Manual on how to do this.

Well, I just wanted to throw in my two cents worth. As soon as I saw the title, I knew that I would have an issue with it. Yes, it is truly sad that they lost their lives, although I don't believe that it should be stereotyped with "See! We shouldn't let teens drive". I'm only eighteen and have been driving for two, almost three years, with no accidents, dents, or tickets. I consider myself a good driver and have gotten myself out of some pretty hairy situations. I also attended my first LOST run on Saturday. Yes, there are irresponsible ones, but there are also those of us who take it seriously. That whole topic really irritates me. It's kinda like the people who say my generation is horrible, self centered, etc. It's the generation before us who raised us and is actually responsible. Also, those are us who are responsible and ambitious are not shown very often because we are hardly MTV material. I'm going to get off my soapbox now....

Sounds like it's already been de-activated. That's what they do after using the above trick. One chime and the light will stay on, instead of non-stop chiming.
