I WONDER IF YOU WOULD BE ABLE TO GET A SIGNAL AROUND HERE. YOU GO LIKE 30 MILES NORTH AND FOR ABOUT A 10 MILE STRETCH THERE IS NO CELL PHONE SIGNAL HOW MUCH DOES THAT HELP FOR SIGNAL AND IS IT WORTH IT. |

Well - I'll congratulate you on a good antenna mount - however I don't want to encourage anyone to talk on a cell phone - even a hands free version while driving (yes I know about 50% of Austin's traffic is on the phone at any given time - that doesn't make it a good idea) The point is attention - if your attention is on the phone call - it's not on traffic. |

Always - although I keep the phone in a briefcase in the backseat and I commonly use ~20 min/month however I've seen my son's cell phone bill at over 1200 calls in 1 month so I do realize that's not average |

Is the reception really that bad for you in the City? I'm not really a big fan of antenna's hanging off cars but if it works for you.... |

I sure miss thosae days when everyone only had a landline. One phone per household and kids had no privacy when talking on the phone. The old wall mounted dial phone in our kitchen. Life was more relaxed. Today is just stress stress stress. Why do people have to call each other ten times while one is out with friends for the night? I see that all of the time. Get a life. If you work out of your vehicle, I can understand the need for an antenna like that especially if you were in the mountains.....can it track the vehicle? Perfect if a teenager is out driving. |

Even hands free? Wouldn't that similar to talking to a passenger? |

Then cool! Actually if I were to get an antenna that's not a bad choice. Glad it's working out |

1st link is a comparision study of Cell phone drivers vs legally drunk drivers (on a simulator) http://www.psych.utah.edu/AppliedCognitionLab/DrivingAssessment2003.pdf 2nd is from National Conference of State Legislatures (it's the 03 analysis - didn't see an update) http://www.ncsl.org/programs/transportation/cellphoneupdate1203.htm They list a number of survey's, data analysis - some of the laws on the books or being considered. I like their final summary is a good point Quote: Driver distraction has always been a problem. Although many activities can potentially divert driver attention, the cell phone has drawn attention to the issue. The cell phone is a highly noticeable distraction in the car, which makes it any easy target for restriction. It is easy to spot a driver with a hand to the ear and know they are distracted by a phone call. It may not be so easy to spot the driver whose mind is elsewhere.

I know someone who recently said "I used to say I'm a good driver. Now I know I'm a bad driver because I'm constantly on the phone and on my PDA and eating lunch and whatever else!" Ya know, he's right. And now with text'ing becoming so popular, it's even worse! There used to be a trick that driving instructors did to students. While they were doing something like parking, the instructor would toss a credit card or other small important object towards the driver's feet. The kids would always immediately bend down to pick it up... WHILE DRIVING! oops!!! |
