Ok, here's my problem, I have a 2002 Liberty Sport 4x4. Recently, my engine threw 6 engine codes. P0300, P301, P302, P303 (misfire codes), and P0442, P0455 (Evap leaks). Does anyone know what this could be, or has anyone ever had this happen? Thanks. |

P0300 = Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire P0301 = Cylinder 1 Misfire P0302 = " 2 " PO303 = " 3 " P0442 = Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak) P0455 = " " " " " " (gross leak) Good Luck Terry |

How is the car running? Any specific symptoms? Give some details but it's probably going to be electrical (computer related) |

Runs like crap. Wants to stall, especially when I accelerate from a stoplight. When I accelerate, it will sputter real bad, then the engine light blinks. |

Sounds like the timing chain/belt (not sure what it is, yet) slipped a gear, possibly. How many miles are on it? |

About 75,000 miles. Should I try and reset computer, or change plugs? Let me know. Thanks. |

Misfire and the evap leak is two different problems. There are some hoses around the gas tank area that usually dry rot and need replacing. Could also be a loose gas cap(which it usually is). Have you ever changed the spark plugs? They should be changed every 30k.. That could be your problem. The liberty has three timing chains and Ive yet to hear of anyone having problems with those. |

I change my plugs EVERY 25K miles. and I use champs. I find that they work better then the stock recomended NGK. |

I'm gonna guess at a large vacum leak since I can't be there to check it.Check vacum supply to purge canister.Large vacum leaks tend to make the random missfire codes appear whether they are secondary ignition related or not.I'm also guessing the line starts in the engine bay area,listen carefully for any unusual hissing noises,if you suspect,wiggle all vac. lines at engine until you hear a change made. Hey, you guys are great. I changed the plugs last summer/fall, but after checking, it's been 32,000 miles ago. We drive the Lib a lot. About 900 miles a week. We blew a head gasket and cracked a head on the first motor at 86,000 miles. Changed the motor, found a used one with 24,000 miles on it for a good price. I have had the large evap leak before, and it was a line to the canister near the gas tank. I replaced that line already, but i'll check it again. Also, with all the different plugs out there, what kind do you recommend? Are the splitfire ones any better? Thanks for the advice. I will post as soon as I figure out what the hell is wrong. |

Any reason for the gasket to blow? Did it over heat or something? NGK's are used stock.. Autolites or champions should be just fine. |

Not really. The gasket blew on me, but from my girlfriend driving the vehicle and not realizing the coolant was out, she overheated the engine to the point that the head cracked, lol. I really never found a legitimate reason for the gasket failure. The head crack was between #1 and #3 cylinders. After pricing out a head, and the gasket set, I ended up just buying a used motor with 24,000 miles out of a wrecked Liberty for $700, which I thought was a good price, and it was the best price I could find at that time. Not many used Liberty engines around, especially when the Liberty wasn't that old. I was surprised that the gasket blew. My mechanic charged me $400, which was an excellent price. That included breaking down the engine to take off the head, then taking the rest of that engine out and installing the new one. I was happy with it (the labor, not the gasket blowing at 86,000 miles, lol). But hey, time to move on and find out what the hell my problem is now. When my gasket blew before, the comp threw engine misfire codes like it is now, but I have absolutely no coolant loss this time. I'm going to change plugs, and check vacuum lines to canister, and get a new gas cap. I'll post when done, Thanks for everyone's help. |

I wouldnt think that another gasket blew. Could be a computer heading south. Its unlikely that its spark plugs since it more than one cylinder although I could be wrong. Could be a tank of bad gas? |

I'm not thinking bad gas, I have been through about 3 tanks while it was running like this. It just seemed to get progressively worse. I just changed all the plugs, a couple of the old ones didn't look that great. I also changed the gas cap, and I already notice that the new one seals a LOT better than the original one. Would a gas cap set off both a small evap leak (P0442) and a large leak (P0455)? I am currently inspecting the vacuum hoses around the canister. Both hoses look good, but the clamps were in bad shape. I am changing clamps tomorrow. Hopefully this will be the end of it. I will start pricing computers just in case, lol. I will let you know, Thanks. |

Any chance you put in an 05 or 06 engine? |

No, the replacement engine was also an 02. But, I have found and fixed the problem!! LOL. I bought a new gas cap, changed the plugs (Denso), and when I went to inspect the evap lines at the canister, I found that on one line going into the canister, a clamp had rusted out and fell off. I replaced all clamps in the area, reset my comp, and we are good as new. So far, it is running great. No misses, no engine lights. Hopefully I won't have any more probs anytime soon. Thanks to all of you guys for all of your help. You guys are the reason that this site is the best. |
