might of missed this before but, should that sponge have oil on it?
just noticed that it connects to the back side of each side of the
engine and was wondering what causes the oil to make its way to the
air intake box? thanks in advance

It's its job to collect moist material, oil, water, other fluids. Mine has stains on it, looks like it is oily.
It's just a dirty sponge bob.. :)
