Is this true?

Does it help to have a rear hitch or skid plate installed?

Those pictures (of the wrecked cars) seem a little out dated don't they?

If the Liberty gas tank where really defective how come we don't hear horror stories on the news about the problems? Where are the news camera's and recall letters urging everyone in the world to run right to the dealer for a new vehicle? Of the 800,000K units on the road we (as in LOST) would have heard of and reported the problem by now.

While I agree the gas tank is in a strange location, I do not agree that it is going to explode. If you get rearended by a Semi-Truck or a Tank rolling down the highway, you will have bigger things on your mind.

I think this might have been debated already too if someone wants to search out the old thread.

Well, no. I see cars like that on the road everyday. The test liberty in the picture has the same body style as mine.

I've seen newspaper articles fom around the states that talk about burnt up liberties too.

I agree with Sleeve84028,

If there was a problem we would have heard about it by now. Besides, if you hit a car or truck hard enough it will cause some issues. As seen in this pic of MY 95 XJ where i was hit HEAD ON. I was traveling 55+ and the other driver was racing his cousin and passing on a slight hill, police stopped short of saying he was traveling over 85-90 mph.

Image

the result was i wound up with my booty end in a dry peanut field and a small fuel leakand a 2000 degree catilytic coverter. car went up in flames with me in it, all be it not for long.

U hit something hard enough and there is gasoline involved, there is most likely going to be a fire. Best rule of thumb is to drive around with as little gas in your tanks as possible.

The 96 XJ i replaced this one with had a rather sever rearend collision. I was sitting at w traffic light and this woman (not to be sexist, but she was a woman) plowed into me at over 45 mpg. Should have been totaled, but NO fire and a FULL tank of gas.

Not to seem cynical or anything but the website is run by a guy who hires out to be an "Automotive Safety Consultant" and is really a big ad for himself. Not to say that there are not some legit concerns there but you gotta take it from where it comes.

It'll help sure... any and all metal reinforcement is a good thing. Just like Rock rails add a bit to the sides, the hitch can add a bit of strenght to the back end.

The problem with the PI 'vic's is that the entire car twists when there is a rear end impact. This twisting can cause the passenger doors to become froozen shut which leaves no way to escape if the car were to catch a flame. In the Liberty's case, it's just the opposite. if you get rear ended, the structural cage takes all of the energy and you can still walk away from the crash (run if it's on fire!) But the point I want to try and make is that the Liberty is a very, very safe vehicle as documented by the countless pictures from roll-overs, front-ender's and other accident pictures that get posted on the board. You are safer in the Liberty than you are in a Neon!

It all depends on how hard , a tank skid may help up to say for example 50 mph, but over that it may help tear off the tank and shove it right up under you. There could be tons of talk regarding this and it would still come down to a big maybe......Grandpa always said when your time comes no matter where you are youre going to go! One of those things that if you worry about it youre a fool for wasting your life away in my opinion

Anyway, all jeeps up until the WK were like the liberty and you do not hear about them in the news everyday..

And or course a hitch and skid will help.. :)

No pun.

You were asking about a hitch and skid helping you, he posted about horrendous crashes that made the vehicle start on fire, making it sound like no matter what you do, under the right circumstances it will explode.

Then you ask the same question again.

Just seemed funny. Guess I'm pretty warped though, I drive neons afterall.

Bob

Dont forget TOW HOOKS.. Gotta have TOW HOOKS, but the hitch in the rear will do. I have a hitch on my 93 minivan that has been hit in the rear. Poor Ford windstar.. lots of damage to her front end. My minivan just needed a little dent fixed on the rear hatch and the bumper was repainted. The hitch took the hit and didn't mess with the frame.

Neons, Go Figure.

I simply stated that if you are in a sever enough accident then the popssibility of any kind of fluid leak is possible. gas is just one of several flamable liquids on board. as that leaks out the risk of it coming incontact with an igition source grows.

Basic physics.

I was in that XJ, and I don't see the pun.

The problem is not the cars we drive but the idiots we allow to drive them. That 17 year old "Dale Ernhart" that hit me was as dumb as a box of rocks. He lived. 5 weeks after the accident while still in his casts and with more metal holding him together than i have, our doctor, yes we had the same orthopedic surgen from the E.R., caught him roller blading.

Anyway. if people used these 2 ton motorized bombs the way they should, then we would not be having this conversation.
