Post subject:  Gas Tank ?'s

The other day, I was going through my owners manual and I came across the Weight's and Capacities section in the index. I glanced at the the fuel tank capacity, which read "19.5 U.S. gallons". In the three years I've had my KJ, I've never been able to put more than about 17 gallons in my tank before the nozzle shuts off. this is the same with every station I've been to in MD, D.C., VA and a few other states. So what's the deal? I wait until my gas gauge reads empty and the warning light turns on, but even when the gauge is touching that little stopper bar (I have no clue what the thing is called), the most gas I can ever put in is just around 17 gallons! Has anyone had a similar problem to this? Maybe my fuel level sensor is bad? Any input is greatly appreciated!

P.S.- does anyone know the location of the fuel filter on the '04 gasser?

I think the gauges lie to you just to keep you from running out of gas.

I wouldn't call this a problem. It's intentional to keep you from running out of gas. Figure you'd be so scared by the time you did run out that you'd deserve it.

I only have the 17.5gal in my '02 and don't think I've ever had more than 16 in a fillup.

Fuel filter is basically under the rear driver's side seat, but under the car. Crawl under there and look up. You will see a hose going from the tank to a cylindrical device bolted under the cargo area/rear seat.

It's on top of the gas tank.

You mean 18.5 gallon,KJ's never had a 17.5 gallon tank,only 18.5,19.5,and 20.5.

Hhhmm... the reason I ask is that I'd like to be able to get as much range out my tank as possible. Right now I get about 300 miles a tank if I don't drive like a mad man. lol
Anyone heard about a larger replacement fuel tank? I vaguely remember hearing about one from ARB a while back. Not sure if it's easily available stateside, though.

Bad idea to completely drain the tank of gasoline.. Submerged fuel pumps use the gasoline to cool the electic motor so when you run the tank really low it puts a little added strees on the pump and shortens the lifespan.

Another negative to running the tank dry is the possibility to start sucking up some debris that is usually suspended in the gasoline. And yes, the fuel filters and socks do catch large particles, it is the small stuff that clogs up your fuel injectors

18.5 gallons in my 02. The most I've ever put into the tank was 17 gallons.

yup and what's crazy is that Chrysler upped the capacity after the first MY to the 19.5 because of the limited range that we get from the 2002 models. Which makes me wonder why they (the engineering teams) didn't do that in the first place!

You are correct, under a 1/4 tank the fuel pump is no longer being cooled and will dramatically shorten the pump life,I never let mine drop below a 1/4 tank, uassuall never go below a 1/2 tank.Plus from growing up in the middles of nowhere with pretty harsh winters you always kept a full tank just in case. The most I've ever put in my KJ besides doing the dealer prep on it was 12 gallons.

Post subject:  Request a Build Sheet

to ask Jeep -
click on link
fill in data - ask for a "build sheet" and "built on date"
you'll get an email back - mine took less than 4 hours.

http://www-5.jeep.com/wccsapp/universal/J/index.jsp?appStr=wccs&titleStr=Contact+Jeep&familyStr=brand&franchise=J&actionURL=%2Fwccs%2Fbrand_forms%2Fus%2Fwebform.jsp&promotion=null&category=U

you will need your vin # and on page 2 (i think) it will show what size tank they installed on YOUR Jeep.

Yeah the most i ever got was 17gallons. The gas gauge needle was pegged well under "E". and the evic was reading 0 miles till empty for a while. Still had 1.5gallons left.

^What he said. I had it pegged on E with the evic on 0 and I still drove another 15miles.. Pump kicked off at 17gallons.

If they went from 18.5 to 19.5 gallons, why didnt they re-calibrate the gauge? If weve got that extra gallon but cant use it, why is it even there? Its not like you hear about people with 02 libertys running out of gas all the time. :?

I usually try to keep mine over a 1/4 tank. It takes me right at 3/4 of a tank to get home and back to school... Sadly Ive got an 1/8 tank right now. :?

Now You know why they call that little light an IDIOT LIGHT. If you keep driving after it lights up YOU ARE AN IDIOT!!! Not trying to be mean. Before the Jeep I had a '95 Dodge Dakota, for a while after I had purchased it used it would get down to just above a 1/4 of a tank and would buck and kick and act like it was running out of gas. I knew that it couldn't be , because I had the window sticker stating that it had a 25 gallon tank. So I looked at the shop manuel and want to the Dakota forum and talked to others who had Dodge Dakota's . After much discussion I bought a new fuel pump/sending unit. Took it down to my local garage and asked to have it installed. The young mechanic started getting upset because he had not diagnosed the problem. His boss ( a buddy of mine) told him just install it that I did know a thing or 2 about machines. Sure enough when he pulled the old fuel pump/send unit you could see on the side a circut board that half way down the side was "FRIED". Hence the signal of "out of gas" far before it was, since Jeep is just another DC product I wouldn't be surprised if we do not have the same system. So when the light comes on when it does "We do have more gas, BUT DON"T PUSH YOUR LUCK". I don't know this for sure and I am just making an assumption based off of another DC product and we also know what happens when one ASSUME's. Just my 2 cents whorth.
