Took the liberty in to rotate the new BFG T/A ko's. While it was there I had them do it's first state safety inspection as my plates are up this month.
I assumed it would breeze through - Wrong!
Rack and pinion gear assembly leaking - Failed!
Quoted $950.00
05 Renegade purchased September 05 never wheeled, primarily highway driven for it's 52,000.
Any TSB's or Recalls for this?
Oh yeah, the darn 3rd brake light is out too.

Get a second opinion. See if it was tampered with.

I've got the 7/70 powertrain warranty but would not assume they would cover the R&P. I guess a call couldn't hurt.
I did suspect tampering to some extent and asked to see the damage. There was a hole in the otherwise clean boot just big enough to jam an awl into the seal. I had also just witnessed them pushing an $89.00 dollar coolant flush on a teenage girl who was almost in tears because she couldn't afford the $160 they were charging to put in an electric cooling fan that I overheard him order for $32.00.
I regret letting them inspect the KJ but thought as long as I was in for the free balance and rotation what the heck.
I will rotate my own tires from now on as well.
My brother is a mechanic and is going to do the job for about $600.00
The inspection is taken care of too.
Man I regret going to Autotire.

I think I would make a few phone calls before spending any money.

Rack and pinion is part of the powertrain? Good luck with that one.

Post subject:  Second Opinion

Sorry to hear about your problems definately get a second opinion. Being in Colorado we don't have these type of problems, but then again we have BOULDER home of the Fruits and Nuts. But seriously look for a good local off road shop and ask for help. You don't have to do what they say but at least you will have a second opinion not to mention all the great guys here at L.O S.T. , who will if
anything else hold your hand during this tuff times if not give you a direction to fight back. Good Luck 8)

Get it checked out by somebody else. I've heard plenty of stories of shops like that spraying a little power steering fluid on the outside of a seal and calling it a leak. If it were really leaking, you'd see spots on your driveway and your fluid would be low.

I've become even more suspicious as I check all the fluids often and as of a week ago power steering was not low. When they pointed out the leak I checked it it was not noticeably low, by the time I got back to the office it was an oz. or two low, one day later and I'm off to Wally world for a quart of Mopar ATF +4. Sad thing is when they do this 85% of the people give them the work. I should have mentioned up front that if anything is found wrong there is no chance they are doing any work.
As I mentioned my brother is doing the repair and I will have him cut off the boot and inspect the seal for physical damage and if it exists I will look into further action.
Thanks for all the replys.
