Post subject:  Differential noise

I had my differentials serviced by the dealer and now there is a howling sound coming from the rear differential. I have a LSD/Trac-lok if they did not put the Trac-lok additive in, would that cause this problem? If they did not is it safe to drive without the additive? to get it back to the dealer (about 40 miles)?

Did they put fluid back in it? (Not tryin to be funny)

Howling is a sign the fluid ain't being picked up properly by the gear or fluid is REAL cold (same thing)

If it wern't howlin before.

The absence of additive should not really make it howl.

I've very FEW mechanics do a job for me in my life that was spot on. Buncha can't cut its

My worst stories were right at the dealer...like when they took a air hammer to my locking lugs instead of asking me for the key, I was 10 foot away drinking a starbucks coffee watching them.

Giving me the bad part# 45rfe tranny filter

Fergetin the oil drain plug and pumping about 35 quarts onto the floor

Leaving my tranny fluid too high

or, Too low

Not torque-N my ball joint nuts

Loose lug nuts

according to the reciept they at least charged me for the fluid, the part numbers listed though are the same for the front and back and nothing extra listed for the rear. I have not looked to see if they actually put the fluid in.

Take it directly back to the dealer and have them put friction modifier in it.Running without friction modifier with a clutch type LSD will shorten it's life by alot. They may have not known it had a LSD,though any mechanic with half a brain can tell the difference between a open diff and a LSD since they have to take the rear cover off anyway to drain the fluid.

No need to take the cover off to change fluid...Pump it out then refill

The other half of their brain should pay attention to detail

No point in changing the fluid unless you pull the cover and get all the fluid and metal particals out, good way to check the gears out while you are cleaning the case out.Now the front diff has a drain plug on the botton so the metal particals will drain out, that's okay.Oh by the way having metal particals in the F/R diffs is normal, not normal if you have alot though and if you have a LSD you will have some clutch material to from normal wear.

I'm not recommending the procedure for everyone. The mechanics will pull this stunt and it is legal. They don't pull your valve covers and oil pan to inspect your motor when they Change your oil do they??

The only metal particals that come out when you take the cover off are suspended ones, the rest sink to those dark crevice areas that don't drain with the cover off and you have to wipe them out with a rag. The others stick to the magnet.

Pumping does a great job but its not an inspection.

Good luck fella

The rear differential does have fluid in it to the proper level, so I am not sure what the problem is now. The dealer is going to look at it on Monday, I am just concerned about driving it to the dealer

Just dont turn any. You may be required to go offroad though. Thats not a problem is it?

Quite a few dealers and service shops now just pump the fluid out so they can cut their service time and move onto the next vehicle. I even know guys that do it that way in their driveway to avoid the mess and time. They just use a suction pump to pull the fluid out and then they fill it back up w/ fresh fluid. Better than nothing but it is still a good idea to inspect the gears and clean the diff out at least once in its life. (usually the first change is the best time to do that)

You should be concerned although I drove mine over 700 miles howling and full of fragments from my no-slip, without a scratch except on the cover.

They might have left something in there. (not trying to be funny again)

I've seen folks that will stuff a rag in one or both sides of the tubes and forget they are there.

Put some additive in there and see if it stops. Hopefully it ain't the trac-loc or a bearing howling

apparently a differential bearing went out. The dealership replaced the set, and it is running fine now. Thanks for all of the help

Driving without posi-additive will wear a TracLoc pretty quick. The clutches really dont like rubbing each other. I always keep a bottle of either Dana Spicer or GM's posi additive in the glovebox of my CJ. Just in case ya gotta change fluid. Its a cheap way to keep your $450 Auburn or $200 Tracloc from smoking. You won't be able to tell that you don't have additive until you start to spin wheels.
